CNN - Egyptian investigators, relatives fly to U.S. as Flight 990 probe widens - November 2, 1999
NEWPORT, Rhode Island (CNN) -- Egyptian investigators, scores of family members of victims of Flight 990, and the president of EgyptAir are scheduled to arrive in the United States from Egypt on Tuesday, as the probe into the air disaster widens, according to Jim Hall, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.
Officials said dozens of relatives of the crash victims of Flight 990 were en route to the United States to identify and bring home the bodies of their loved ones.
Recovering the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder are a priority for investigators, to help determine events leading up to the jetliner's plunge from an altitude of 33,000 feet, a drop that happened so suddenly it took only 2 minutes, and the crew was unable to issue a verbal distress call.

EgyptAir Flight 990 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flight 990 was a Los Angeles-New York-Cairo flight operated by EgyptAir.
Flight data showed that the flight controls were used to move the elevators in order to intiate and sustain the steep dive.
Unlike the 9/11 hijackings, the captain of the EgyptAir 990 flight left the cockpit as routine and not in response to an altercation in the passenger cabin.

The Atlantic | November 2001 | The Crash of EgyptAir 990 | Langewiesche
Because of the scheduled duration of the flight to Cairo, two cockpit crews had been assigned to the ocean crossing—an "active crew," including the aircraft commander, to handle the first and last hours of the flight; and a "cruise crew," whose role was essentially to monitor the autopilot during the long, sleepy mid-Atlantic stretch.
Flight 990 pushed back from the gate and taxied toward the active runway at 1:12 A.M. Because there was little other traffic at the airport, communications with the control tower were noticeably relaxed.
Every detail that emerged from the two flight recorders fit that scenario: the sequence of the switches and controls that were moved, the responses of the airplane, and the words that were spoken, however cryptic and incomplete.

Egypt Air Crash Revives Flight 800 Theories   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Flight 800 crashed 10 miles south of the Hamptons in Long Island just after the sun had set over the tourist filled summer rentals.
The animation explained that the eyewitnesses did not see a separate object, but the plane itself in "various stages of crippled flight.” But the data used by the CIA was contradicted by the RADAR data, and eyewitnesses disagreed with the official interpretation of their observations.
Although the eyewitnesses and RADAR data state the contrary, the official version of the crash of Flight 800 is based on a sharp "zoom climb" (exchange of airspeed for altitude).

Flight data recorder (FDR) and radar data indicated that the airplane leveled at its assigned altitude of FL 330 at 0144:27.
Examination of the FDR data for the October 30th flight to LAX revealed that at the time the captain reported he disconnected the autopilot because it was "hunting" for the glideslope during the approach to LAX, the autopilot was operating in its LOC (localizer approach) mode, which does not have glideslope intercept capability.

It was being rumored on Monday that NTSB accident investigators are seriously considering surrendering the probe of the EgyptAir Flight 990 crash to the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of a comment made by a pilot before the final fateful moments that may have been a prayer.
The flight data recorder from the Boeing 767 established that less than an hour into the flight from New York, the plane's automatic pilot was turned off, and the engines were throttled back before being shut down during its subsequent steep dive.
The fl boxes -- the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder -- are considered keys to figuring out why Flight 990 plummeted into to the ocean on Sunday, killing all 217 on board.

Many questions raised by Egyptair Flight 990 crash
The crash of Egyptair Flight 990 was the third such tragedy in three years for a passenger jet taking off from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City for a transatlantic flight.
TWA Flight 800 was a Boeing 747 and the Swissair jet was an MD-11, built by McDonnell-Douglas before it was taken over by Boeing.
While more than 1,000 flights a day originate at Kennedy, many of them taking the transatlantic route, the loss of three flights in three years with a combined death toll of 676 inevitably suggests that there are unexamined problems with airline operations there.
