Flight engineer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In aviation, a flight engineer is a member of the aircrew of an aircraft who is responsible for checking the aircraft before and after each flight, and for monitoring aircraft systems during flight.
In civil operations and some military aircraft the flight engineer sits behind the pilot and co-pilot in the cockpit, facing a side panel of gauges and indicators.
The flight engineer is the aircraft systems expert onboard and responsible for troubleshooting and suggesting solutions to in-flight emergencies, as well as computing takeoff and landing data.

 Pilot & Flight Engineer
Flight instructors who accumulate the necessary flight hours and experience often move on to jobs as corporate or airline pilots, but some remain in the teaching field.
Second officers or flight engineers may advance to co-pilot position within a year, but it usually takes from seven to twelve years to become a pilot or captain, depending on the size of the airline and rank on the seniority list.
Flight engineers or second officers troubleshoot and, if possible, repair faulty equipment in flight, check and maintain aircraft log books, report mechanical difficulties to mechanic crew chief, and make a final post-flight inspection of the aircraft.

 Electronic Code of Federal Regulations:
Special purpose flight engineer and flight navigator certificates are issued under this section only for airplane types that can have a maximum passenger seating configuration, excluding any flight crewmember seat, of more than 30 seats or a maximum payload capacity (as defined in §135.2(e) of this chapter) of more than 7,500 pounds.
An applicant without an aircraft class rating on his foreign flight engineer license may be issued a class rating if he shows that he currently meets the requirements for exercising the privileges of his foreign flight engineer license on that class of aircraft.
An applicant for a flight engineer certificate and class rating under the provisions of §63.37(b)(6) is not eligible to take the practical test unless he has successfully completed an approved flight engineer ground school course in the same type of airplane for which he has completed an approved flight engineer flight course.

 Aircraft pilots and flight engineers
When flying under instrument flight rules—procedures governing the operation of the aircraft when there is poor visibility—the pilot in command, or the company dispatcher, normally files an instrument flight plan with air traffic control so that the flight can be coordinated with other air traffic.
Airplane pilots, with the assistance of autopilot and the flight management computer, steer the plane along their planned route and are monitored by the air traffic control stations they pass along the way.
Pilots may qualify for this rating by having the required hours of flight experience, including 40 hours of experience in flying by instruments; they also must pass a written examination on procedures and FAA regulations covering instrument flying and demonstrate to an examiner their ability to fly by instruments.

The course is intended to teach experienced engineers the philosophy and skills required to undertake all forms of research and development test flying including complete military release programmes.
The aim is to produce a graduate well versed and practised in flight and systems testing techniques who will be capable of analysing their experiences, and those of his test pilot, and giving a reasoned and objective account of them.
For the majority of flying exercises, students are first given a demonstration flight with their tutor before planning and conducting their own test flights Qualitative observations and performance data taken in flight are then presented in the form of official reports.
