The initial requirement of these newly mandated data recorders was to record the actual flight conditions of the aircraft, i.e., heading, altitude, airspeed, vertical accelerations, and time.
Flight recorders have changed in design and airline usefulness over the past 40 years.
One of the greatest safety inventions for the commercial airline industry has been the crash protected flight recorder, more commonly called the “Black Box.” Today, flight recorders for accident investigation are mandatory pieces of equipment in civil aircraft.

From all of the available evidence the Board belives that the inflight disintegration was caused by aerodynamic loads imposed on the aircraft which exceeded its design strength and which were generated by an excessive airspeed combined with turbulence and maneuvering loads.
Of the relatively few which occurred to Viscount aeroplanes in normal en route cruising flight, several were caused by doors opening or engine or propeller troubles, but after which the aeroplane was successfully landed.
(iii) A Viscount approaching a coastal aerodrome in poor weather in failing light, signalled that it was "at 2,000 feet with the coastline in sight".

The FAA therefore produced a notice enforcing the removal of foil recorders, with the installation of digital recorders by May 1989, and the recording of five additional parameters by May 1994.
Eventually, in 1965, the recorders were upgraded from their original specification of 100g impact to 1,000gs.
