A participant in the National Air Races during the 1920's, she was the first woman to make a non-stop transcontinental flight in 1932 and set several non-stop transcontinental speed records.
Amelia Earhart Putnam was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame on December 17, 1968 for outstanding contributions to aviation by her dedicated promotion of the interests of women in flying, setting of numerous records in the air, and pioneering in transcontinental and transoceanic flights.
In 1933 she became the first woman to pilot an autogiro, setting an altitude record and also making a solo exhibition tour across the country.

 flight data recorder for aviation
The Midé/PSI Flight Data Recorder (FDR) is a low-cost, lightweight, autonomous, user-friendly flight data recorder that simplifies record-keeping and instruction.
In either configuration, the FDR unit uses a Flash Memory card to record aircraft position, altitude (GPS and pressure), 3-axis magnetic heading, 3-axis acceleration, time, temperature, cockpit acoustics and intercom (audio recording can be switched on or off, as desired).
The flight path display shows the relative heading of the aircraft, which is not to scale.

 History
The initial requirement of these newly mandated data recorders was to record the actual flight conditions of the aircraft, i.e., heading, altitude, airspeed, vertical accelerations, and time.
Flight recorders have changed in design and airline usefulness over the past 40 years.
One of the greatest safety inventions for the commercial airline industry has been the crash protected flight recorder, more commonly called the “Black Box.” Today, flight recorders for accident investigation are mandatory pieces of equipment in civil aircraft.

Most of the SR-71 fleet has now been retired, except for two Blackbirds currently on loan to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center where the aircraft are being used as "test beds" for high altitude research.
In 1980, the previous water speed record holder, Lee Taylor, tried to reclaim his title in a 2.5 million dollar rocket-boat called "Discovery II." The missile-shaped craft was constructed of aluminum, titanium and stainless steel and was powered by a rocket engine that burned hydrogen peroxide fuel.
Two days later the first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record was made official when the ThrustSSC completed two runs within an hour at an average speed of 763.035mph.

Aviation Records - Improvements to Aircraft Design bring Speed and Endurance Records, 1929-1931
While flight at high altitudes was undertaken first by military pilots testing new frontiers in military aviation, in the longer view it meant that high altitude commercial air traffic could fly clear of the low altitude clutter of planes in the air, with the added benefit of lower fuel consumption for point to point flights.
The flight is a reminder of the mixture of opportunism and meticulous planning that made aviation's early record-breaking flights possible.
It was won in 1931 by Lowell R. Bayles of Springfield, Massachusetts in the Granville Brothers' Gee Bee, which set a new record for a closed course race of 236.2 mph.

 NASA - Helios
In August, 2001, the lightweight solar-electric aircraft had reached an official world record altitude for non-rocket powered aircraft of 96,863 feet during a maximum-altitude flight from PMRF, the first of two major flight milestones set for the craft by NASA under ERAST.
The aircraft then underwent major upgrades, including the installation of high-efficiency solar cell arrays across the wing, navigation and emergency lights, improved avionics and more efficient propellers, prior to its record altitude flight in 2001.
The Helios Prototype aircraft involved in the mishap was a proof-of-concept solar electric- powered flying wing designed to operate at high altitudes for long duration flight.

Langford expects it to break the world altitude record for unmanned aircraft of 67,028 feet (12.7 miles) and the record for altitude in horizontal flight by an airplane of 85,069 feet (16.1 miles).
The role of the aircraft Perseus, Dr. Langford said, is to change the thinking-in a somewhat more genteel manner-of the scientific and aviation bureaucracy, which until now has given a cold stare to the idea of unmanned high altitude flight.
He now heads Aurora Flight Sciences Corp., a small aircraft company based in Manassas, VA, that built the new aircraft for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at a cost of about $1.5 million.

Perlan's objectives in the Sierra Nevada mountain range this month are to complete high and cold testing of the aircraft, navigation and support systems - and to break the 17-year old glider absolute altitude record - one of the most important records in gliding.
The 'Perlan Project' high altitude glider research project announced over the weekend that 2003 flights have now ended and that next season's flights are planned for June-September 2004.
But the Perlan Project team expect better conditions tomorrow (Sunday, March 16th) and record-setting balloonist, sailor and aviator Fossett and former NASA test pilot Enevoldson plan to enter the graceful Perlan research glider (wearing rather less graceful full NASA pressure suits) shortly before noon Sunday - with plans (weather permitting) for a 5 hour flight.
