Topic: Flight to Mars

Flight to Mars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flight to Mars was a 72-minute 1951 Cinecolor science fiction film, written for the screen by Arthur Strawn.
They are anatomically human, and are suspicious of the earthmen's motives, with the majority of the governing body finally deciding to keep the earthmen prisoner.

DVD Savant Review: Flight to Mars
The first Mars rocket (called Rocket M.A.R.S.) is launched sucessfully, but crashlands on the red planet after being damaged in a meteor shower.
At 72 minutes, Flight to Mars is about five minutes shorter than Virginia Huston's crying fit when she finds out Arthur Franz has fallen for top-billed Marguerite Chapman, who plays a Martian with the best legs ever seen.
As dull as Mars may be, even worse is the Earthlings' non-reaction to being confronted by men in colorcoded space suits 30 seconds after touching down.

Space FAQ 08/13 - Planetary Probe History
MARINER 4, the sister probe to MARINER 3, did reach Mars in 1965 and took the first close-up images of the Martian surface (22 in all) as it flew by the planet.
One thing scientists learned was that Mars' sky was pinkish in color, not dark blue as they originally thought (the sky is pink due to sunlight reflecting off the reddish dust particles in the thin atmosphere).
MARS 4 - Attempt at orbiting Mars in 1974, braking rockets failed to fire, probe went on into solar orbit.

Flight to Mars: the Return Trip
For flying back from Mars to Earth the Hohmann ellipse can also be used, but again, the planets need to be positioned just right at the time of launch.
Since Earth and Mars constantly change their relative position, it stands to reason that if we sufficiently delay the return trip, Earth will move from position (2) relative to Mars to position (3), at which time the return trip can begin.
Indeed, when Earth is closest to Mars and overtaking it, Mars will seem (for a while) to be moving backwards among the stars.

Flight to Mars is typically goofy 50s sci-fi fodder, with enough unintentional howlers to please any fan of the genre: for example, at their first meeting, Ikron says, “As you know we haven’t been able to build a ship that has reached the earth”...
On their way to Mars, when they lost radio contact with the earth, the crew uses the pre-ordained method of sending reports back in a cylinder that they pop in a pneumatic tube -- sort of like the way department stores handled money in the 50s.
Flight to Mars was filmed using the 2-strip “Cinecolor” process (which was also used for Bela Lugosi’s notorious Scared to Death).

Flight to Mars: How Long? And along what path?
As an approximation assume that the orbits of Earth and Mars are both circles in the same plane, centered on the Sun.
Those unfamiliar with orbits might think that the best way to reach Mars from Earth is to wait until the two planets are closest to each other (as in the drawing here), then aim the rocket towards Mars and fire away.
Mars should be in such a position relative to Earth at the time of launch, that it reaches point A at the same time as the spaceship does.

Guardian Unlimited | Life | Space flight is hell on Earth
And it is here in Moscow, in a research hangar at the end of this path behind the IMBP, that one finds the key to any successful flight to Mars: three battered, stainless steel capsules linked by cables and corrugated metal pipes.
This month the Guardian was the first foreign media outlet to explore the pressurised capsules, built in 1970, as they are updated in preparation for the record-breaking Mars flight simulation.
Towards the end of the Mars leg, communication between ship and controllers would be delayed 20 minutes or more, says Viktor Baranov, deputy director of IMBP, putting the emphasis of responsibility on the crew.

The Mars 96 spacecraft was launched from Baikonur on 16 November 1996.
The spacecraft was not inserted into the interplanetary trajectory to Mars due to a malfunction in the Block-D (the third stage of the rocket) and during the third revolution around the Earth the spacecraft reentered the Earth's atmosphere and fell into the Pacific Ocean.

Flight To Mars had the added bonus of being in colour, but both were enjoyable and at times humorous, due in no small part to the 1950s concepts of space and life on other planets.
The entire mission was kept from the general public in its early stages, and it caused a lot of concern when the U.S. Military released a world wide press release informing the general public of a propelled flight of such magnitude.

Flight to Mars gets off to a decent start, by 50's sci-fi movie standards, as a group of guys and the token gal set off for an ambitious exploration of the Red Planet.
