  Blu-ray Review: Flightplan | High-Def Digest
In fact, 'Flightplan' was originally written for a male lead until Foster stepped in, which only further proves her weight in Hollywood: if you have the power to get a script greenlit and retooled for your distinct persona, you must be doing something right.
Lest one think from reading this that 'Flightplan' is somehow some sort of art film, there are a couple of moments of typical bombast in which the surrounds are more pronounced, namely the film's eye-rolling conclusion.
'Flightplan' is a thriller with a set-up is so good that it is impossible to not to be disappointed by its rote conclusion.

Flightplan uses every parent's fear of losing a child as the basis for its suspense.
In Flightplan, Kyle faces just such a crisis and it's made worse by the fact that people don't believe she really had a child on the plane in the first place.

 Filmtracks: Flightplan (James Horner)
In Flightplan, Jodie Foster is taking her daughter across the world on a flight to address the death of her husband, riding on a newly designed super-aircraft which Foster's character helped engineer.
To understand why the music for Flightplan starts and stops, builds hope and the deflates, and generally exists in a sort of dazy lack of focus, the relationship between Horner's direction and Foster's immediate frame of mind seems the be the key.
The recording quality of Flightplan is well executed, with the percussion-heavy orchestra (no brass, eight piano performers) easily allowing for the lighter elements of woodwinds and percussion to be enjoyed clearly...

 DVD Times - Flightplan
Flightplan is a Jodie Foster vehicle through and through, to the extent that the other participants on either side of the camera scarcely seem to matter.
In a sense, Flightplan stays much truer to the central gimmick of using its deliberately setting to evoke tension, remaining on board the plane for the duration of the movie, whereas, in Red Eye, not only the final act but also the main threat located on the ground.
Flightplan is a film that provides no real challenge for either the cast, the crew or the viewer, but it is a slickly produced affair and is certainly watchable enough provided you don't set your expectations too high.

Such is the dilemma posed in Flightplan, but like any good suspense thriller, it's best not to spoil things by talking about it too much.
This is sort of the case with Flightplan.
Flightplan also plays upon the fearfulness and distrust in air travel these days, as did the recent taut thriller Red-Eye.

The solution is so twisty and specious that it makes absolutely no sense and requires, besides, that Kyle possess a detailed knowledge of explosives and, ultimately, that she demonstrate a puzzling lack of concern for the child for whom she's spent the whole film chewing scenery.
Marooned in Flightplan, then, is a premise that pings off the things in our innate nature that are most sacred and animal: the instinct to protect your child; the fear of being falsely-accused; the fear of being plotted against; the fear of being perceived as insane; and the fear of actually being insane.
Its best moments are therefore those where Kyle's fear is at fever pitch--when a cabin-ful of people look at her in mute judgment (or join in ironic, hostile applause), for instance, or when she's convinced by positions of authority that her child was, in fact, a phantasm created by grief.

If I revealed everything that happens in the 2005 thriller "Flightplan" you'd realize that most of it is pretty far-fetched; so preposterous, in fact, and yet presented so straight, that it would sound like a total disaster of a movie.
It works because enough of it catches our attention and keeps us guessing that we don't entirely mind that the last third falls into clichés; and the performance of star Jodie Foster is so good, she helps us forget just how absurd the whole thing can really be.
I think most people looking for a decent thriller will find it in "Flightplan." It's not a great movie because it takes the easy way out at the end, but it holds your attention long enough to get your money's worth.

Like that film, the actresses latest star vehicle, Flightplan, is a thriller set in a confined space—albeit a massive, double-decker jumbo jet—that depicts a single mother's attempt to save her young daughter.
The warmth and humor she once displayed (for example, in Little Man Tate) has given way to a chilly stoicism.
Although she usually comes across as stiff in romantic roles, like, Anna and the King, she is boxing herself into a corner by playing a brainy version of the tired "woman in jeopardy" role in Panic Room and, now, Flightplan, which never quite makes it off the runway.

 The Arts Glance
The film Flightplan, directed by Robert Schwentke and produced by Brian Grazer contained many elements of well-crafted suspense and drama, but the overall plot was found to be disappointing.
Jodie Foster’s acting was key to capturing the drama of the film, and she did so brilliantly in her role as Kylie Pratt, the girl’s terrified mother.
My opinion is that, for some reason, Sarsgaard isn't able to carry the part--somehow he can't attain the specific level of depth of motivation called for in the script.

SPLICEDwire | "Flightplan" movie review (2005) "Flightplan" review, Robert Schwentke, Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard
For two smart, nerve-wracking acts, "Flightplan" is a thriller almost worthy of the tag "Hitchcockian," in which Jodie Foster plays a distraught mother whose forlorn 6-year-old girl has disappeared in the middle of an overnight flight from Berlin to New York.
Already an emotional wreck because her husband has just died -- his coffin is in the cargo hold -- when Kyle Pratt (Foster) wakes up three hours into the flight to discover her daughter gone from her side, she loses it.
Soon Foster's intense performance of raw emotion and redoubtable maternal instinct is all that's left keeping "Flightplan" in the air, as she sneaks around in the bowels of the plane, which she had once helped design in her job as a propulsion engineer.

 BBC - Movies - review - Flightplan
In one of those bum coincidences that studios seem unable to avoid, Flightplan touches down just months after Wes Craven's distinctly more entertaining mile-high thriller Red Eye.
Aside from the location, the films have little in common; Flightplan owes more to Hitchcock's classic The Lady Vanishes with its tale of a grieving wife (Jodie Foster) who loses her daughter on a commercial flight, only to be told by passengers and crew that she was never there in the first place.
After an exhaustive search of the super-duper jumbo flight (the film is very good at exploring the nooks and crannies behind the public face of air travel), hunky captain Sean Bean concludes that poor old Jodie must be bonkers.
