The Gregory Highway is a north-south highway that links several towns in the central highlands region of Queensland and forms part of the inland route connecting Townsville and Mackay with New South Wales.
The highway continues north for 10km where it intersects with the Peak Downs Highway, marking the start of the Gregory Developmental Road, which continues through vast, remote cattle farming districts to reach the Belyando Crossing roadhouse and eventually the Flinders Highway, just south-west of Charters Towers.
Joining the Flinders Highway for 7km, the Gregory Developmental Road continues north-west, again through remote cattle farming districts and generally through outback Queensland, passing by the Blue Water Springs roadhouse before reaching the Kennedy Developmental Road at The Lynd Junction.

Flinders Chase is the name given to a complex of protected areas covering the western end of Kangaroo Island.
Flinders Chase National Park is comprised of three parts, totalling 32,600 ha; the Cape du Couedic and Rocky River area to the south west, the Gosse Lands to the north east and Cape Borda Lightstation on the north west tip of Kangaroo Island.

This road plough was placed beside the Flinders Highway to mark the sealing of the last stretch of highway between Talia and Streaky Bay, on Eyre Peninsula.
This plough was pulled by two to four horses depending on the condition of the ground to be levelled and had a maximum speed of one mile per hour.
The District Council of Streaky Bay used this small plough to construct the original Flinders Highway in the early 1900s with a method of road construction similar to the later ‘brattenising’ method.

I have included Developmental Roads as they are really a precursor to the Highway classification - it has been a clear intention of the Queensland Department of Main Roads (QMR) that once Developmental Roads are constructed to highway standard that they are upgraded to Highway status.
Prior to the introduction of the Road Plan of Queensland, the highway system of Queensland was vastly different, including greatly different names, numbers and alignments.

Travelling to the Flinders Ranges when on a trip to the Red Centre and Ayers Rock is easy.
Coming from Adelaide or Melbourne you can follow the coast highway and turn off at Stirling North seven kilometres before Port Augusta and come through Quorn and then on to Hawker.
