Flinders Ranges National Park - Enpsychlopedia
Flinders Ranges is a mountain range and a national park in South Australia ( Australia), 384 km north of Adelaide.
Hawker townsite was surveyed at a bend in the railway line where the train line left the main road to Blinman, and named in 1880 after South Australian politician and pastoralist, George Charles Hawker.
This, along with the copper mining lobby (copper was mined in the Hawker-Flinders Ranges area in the late 1850's and transported overland by bullock dray), induced the government to build narrow gauge railway line north of Port Augusta through Pichi Richi Pass, Quorn, Hawker and along the west of the ranges, eventually to Marree.

 Dictionary of Australian Biography We-Wy
While in Australia he wrote a little for the press but published nothing in book form, and though befriended by James Smith (q.v.) and others he was obliged to apply for admittance to the Melbourne benevolent asylum in February 1862.
Returning to Australia he became director of military operations, and was acting-chief of the general staff at the outbreak of the 1914-18 war.
He came to Australia when there were few sculptors there of ability, and it must be presumed that his sketch models were better than his finished works, as in later years he more than once obtained important commissions in competition with better men.

Not dissimilar to the trek across the Nullarbor, the highway is serviced by several roadhouses and small towns, although there are barren gaps of up to 254 kilometres.

Australia’s Lutheran heartland, the Barossa Valley, is home to many of the country’s biggest and best-known wine producers and generates more wine each year than any other region.
If not for Lutheran migrants and their passion for fine wine, the Australian wine industry might not be the international powerhouse it is today.

 Around Australia Trip 2004 - Part 1
As we drove along the Flinders Highway, we saw more bicycles with panniers, and I marvelled as always at the people who would attempt long distance rides.
However this road lets us avoid going into Townsville, and cuts a lot of kilometres off by the time you join the main road west, the Flinders Highway, and the road was open all the way.
By then we were only 70 km east of the Threeways, where we intercept the Stuart Highway, the main-north south road between Adelaide and Darwin.
