The island was claimed by American guano diggers under the U.S. Guano Act of 1856, but apparently it was not occupied by them.

Flint Island is surrounded by a steep fringing coral reef which dries at low water and extends 100 yards off the island except at the Northern end of the island where it extends seaward about 900 yards and the southern end where it extends in an east southeasterly direction for about 500 yards.
A settlement is located on the Northwestern side of the island and a flag staff, standing on a conspicuous white stone cairn, is close to the landing place near the settlement, where two reefs form a natural breakwater.
Supposedly there were two brackish lagoons in the interior of the island but perhaps because it was so dry on the island all we found were the dried remnants of one of the ponds.
