When it upgraded the Flint Truck plant in 1999 with new, state-of-the-art robotic welding equipment, GM outsourced the production of the equipment overseas to workers in Sweden.
To better understand international trade and the whole corporate outsourcing controversy, consider how much you benefit daily from “household outsourcing.” Every time you buy groceries or clothes, use the services of a dry cleaner or a car wash, or eat in a restaurant, you are outsourcing.
In the end, outsourcing is nothing more than acquiring goods or services from an outside source, and households and corporations like the Flint Journal and GM do it all the time when global sourcing is more cost-effective than domestic production.
