Clerow "Flip" Wilson (December 8, 1933 – November 25, 1998) was an African-American comedian and actor.
Wilson re-tells the story of Christopher Columbus from a slightly 'urban' perspective, with Columbus finally convincing the Spanish monarchs to fund his voyage by noting that discovering America means that he can thus also discover Ray Charles.
Wilson was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and died of liver cancer in Malibu, California.

Clerow "Flip" Wilson was the first fl entertainer to successfully have his own variety show aptly called "The Flip Wilson Show." Debuting in 1970, the show was an instant success, and it was the second most popular series for four years until "The Waltons" took its place.
Flip did not deny his race in his comedy, as was apparent in the characters of "Geraldine Jones" and "Rev. Leroy," but he also did not resort to demeaning his race just to win a white audience.
Consequently, Flip's success was not just in serving as an inspiration to other fls, but it was also in being able to communicate to whites what it really meant to be fl and how that was not so different from being white.

Apparently this was based on a true event in the real Flip Wilson's life where he dressed in drag to perform in a school play, replacing a sick female classmate.
Flip (he got the nickname because he flipped people out with his outlandish stories) was a very well known standup comedian and frequent Tonight Show guest (he was discovered by Johnny Carson and Redd Foxx) when NBC picked him to host a variety hour - and the public took to him, and the series, immediately.

The scholarship selection criteria require students to write a 500-word essay on some aspect of Flip Wilson's work and impact on television or comedy; be enrolled in school full time as a junior or senior journalism major; require financial need and have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.
Wilson died at the age of 64 on November 25, 1998.
