Flirting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flirting is often described as casual conversation with a romantic touch, but it need not be spoken interaction at all.
Flirting is a way of treating serious things (such as sexual attraction) with an almost mocking or self-mocking air of ease.
People who flirt can speak and act in a way that suggests greater intimacy than is appropriate to the relationship (or to the amount of time the two people have known each other), without actually saying or doing anything inappropriate.

Flirting (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flirting is a 1991 Australian film about a romance between two teenagers, written and directed by John Duigan.
It is the second in a planned trilogy of films by Duigan.
It is considered by many to be one of the last films of the Australian New Wave film movement that flourished in the 1980's.

DVD Verdict Review - Flirting With Disaster
Flirting With Disaster is that rare find—a comedy that builds entirely out of character and dialogue, without falling back on the inserted situational humor or laborious gags that plague ninety percent of American comedies released in the last decade.
Flirting's characters are similarly trapped by their neuroses and obsessions, but oftentimes Woody's plots became inhibited by those same things.
The film is not limited to being solely about the idiosyncrasies of its characters; rather, it provides a solid plot and allows those idiosyncrasies to dictate the way the characters will behave in a given situation.

'Flirting' with unpredictable hilarity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The scene in which we first meet them perfectly sets up the offbeat charm of "Flirting with Disaster," as Moore lectures Arquette on the dangers of sagging breasts, proceeding to freely flash her own pair as a textbook counterexample.
His debut was 1994's "Spanking the Monkey," which hinted at the impressive talent that has now shown itself with its dark and perversely funny story of a teenage boy and his unusual relationship with his mother.
With this exhilarating film, Russell and his enchanting ensemble infuse the American comedy with such a breath of creativity, that our minds frantically scramble to keep up with the narrative between the seemingly ceaseless moments of hilarity.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Flirting | Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Flirting" is a sequel to the 1987 (shown here in mid-'88) Australian coming-of-age film "The Year My Voice Broke," about an eccentric youth named Danny Embling and his life in rural Australia in 1962.
Unfortunately, the film as a whole is undercut by its inability to maintain a steady tenor, vacillating uneasily from comedy to drama with some slow-going interludes in between.
"Flirting" is rated R for violence, sex, nudity (male backsides in the shower), some vulgarity and one profanity.

 FLIRTING WITH DISASTER
It was still funny the second time around, but I have to say this is one of those films where surprise at what happens next helps to make the story more amusing.
All in all, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER is a family-driven comedy that pushes the edge of the envelope of good taste without ever going over, unlike some of Stiller's more recent endeavors.
FLIRTING is an intelligent, heartfelt comedy that will leave you in stitches.

 Thandie Newton Biography
Her next film of any significance was 1994's Interview With the Vampire, in which she had a minor role which, ironically enough, called for her to be killed off by Kidman's husband, Tom Cruise.
Newton's second film that year, Beloved, won her further recognition, both for her mere presence in the highly-anticipated adaptation of Toni Morrison's novel, and for her portrayal of the mysterious, ghostly girl who torments Oprah Winfrey's Sethe.
Finally, it was with her third film of 1998, Besieged, that Newton graduated from relative obscurity to the rank of Hollywood Up and Comer.

Flirting with Disaster: film about searching
“Flirting with Disaster” is a comedy about an adoptee’s search for his birthparents, and it deals with this issue as if it were something normal and natural to do.
The movie manages to realistically portray the stresses searching and a newborn child have on personal relationships: the confused allegiances of the adoptee, the insecurities of the spouse and adoptive parents.
Birthparents might not be as crazy about this film as adoptees and adoptive parents, although I thought a good range of birthparents was represented.

David O. Russell (Flirting With Disaster)
David O. Russell, the unpredictable writer and director behind hot-movie-of-the-moment "Flirting with Disaster," seems an unlikely candidate to have become the latest toast of Tinseltown.
Scrambling between two ringing phones, a fax, and his screaming two-year-old who refused to put his pants on, he put to rest any doubts that Mel, the somewhat scattered and non-commital hero of the wildly funny "Flirting," was indeed based on his own life.
The films don't carry a lot of music, so you have to be very particular about what's going to fit.

A deliriously funny screwball comedy, Flirting With Disaster (1996) expertly combines the urban neuroses of Woody Allen with the madcap farce of Preston Sturges.
Written and directed by David O. Russell (Three Kings), Flirting With Disaster is one of the few comedies in recent memory that truly gets funnier as it speeds towards its satisfying conclusion.
Nor does the film ever go the formulaic route — it's consistently surprising, particularly in regard to the knockabout climax in New Mexico, where all the characters collide with hilarious results.

 DVD Verdict Review - Flirting
It's easy to slap together a film built entirely of teen clichés, populate it with one-dimensional hormone-crazy characters, lace it with fart and pee-pee jokes, and pander to your key demographic's anti-authoritarian instincts.
It's far more difficult to create a film that takes teens seriously as human beings, accurately presents the tangle of conflicts inside their heads and hearts, vividly evoking that sensibility and those emotions for an adult audience who's largely forgotten what those years were truly like.
Flirting is all about naturalism, and the film's characters reflect it.

"Flirting With Disaster," which is vastly more colorful than its tame title, begins reasonably enough with a meeting between Mel and Tina Kalb (Tea Leoni), whose manner is chic and professional even though it's not precisely clear what business she's in.
If "Flirting With Disaster" were a conventional comedy, it would settle for that premise and the "Friends"-like fact that Mel and Nancy both work at the Museum of Natural History.

But it was this runaway success that set the stage for a showdown between the film's producers and the new behemoth on the bloc.
And it seems a shame that just when the film industry has hinted at a return to its golden days, a rash of poorly made films out to make some quick cash could have the same effect as those dreaded '70s contractor films.
One of the main problems, says Abdallah, is that when producers get their money back before a film is even released (when, for example, a company buys all the rights), it eliminates the all-important element of risk.

Flirting with Disaster offers many moments that punch you in the gut with their comic effectiveness, but the film has one central annoyance: The characters spend most of the film bickering, screaming, yelling, bellowing, screeching, shouting, and squealing.
Flirting with Disaster, in a way, could be seen as a precursor to the current wave of gross-out comedies, typified by the American Pie films or the movies of the Farrelly Brothers.
Flirting with Disaster is a very funny film with perhaps a tad too much shrill shouting.

 About the Film
Flirting with Power is a surprising look at the humor and heartbreak independent and third party candidates face as they challenge the political status quo in the United States.
Featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of Perot on the campaign trail, the film offers a first hand look at the power of citizens to reclaim the political process and alter the national dialogue.
Through the evolution of the Reform Party and the 1996 election, Flirting with Power examines the humor and heartbreak of Perot's legacy, the truth about American politics, and the realities of a seriously compromised democracy that only renewed citizen activism can restore.

The beautiful camerawork in this film is accompanied by a great soundtrack, boasting quite a mix with the likes of FC Kahuna, The Cult, XTC, and Kylie Minogue (you've heard these tracks before, but the film uses them very well).
Flirting tends to be a major feature in most James Bond movies, and that old TV series Moonlighting, but it hardly shows up anywhere else (except, perhaps, for some of the older movies that didn't show sex).
A tangent: The movie Flirting (which featured the (semi) debut of Nicole Kidman, Noah Taylor, and Thandie Newton) hardly had any flirting, although there is a cute scene of subtle non-verbal flirting.

Those words, spoken deep into Flirting with Disaster, are so articulate and provide so much insight, not only into the characters, but into relationships in general, it stops you dead in your tracks, and sticks with you long after the film is over.
The fact that this film works is not only a miracle in of itself, but the fact that it deals with subject matter usually reserved for serious drama makes the film all the more impressive.
This film, like many of the better recent comedies (There's Something About Mary is one) is one of the few comedies that allows the humor to build up through the movie and make it unforgettable.

Probably the whole film can be summed up in the final scene, when two straightlaced evangelical types explain their opposition to gay marriage leading to gays adopting children with, "Imagine all the neurosis those poor children would have to live with"---when in fact what we've been watching is 2 hours of 100% HETEROSEXUAL traditional-family neurosis!!!

DEEP FOCUS: Flirting With Disaster   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Flirting With Disaster, the second film from idiosyncratic writer/director David O. Russell, is a quirky family comedy with much to recommend it.
Russell's metier clearly seems to be The Family (his first film was the incest-themed Spanking the Monkey), and his ideas here have to do with the comforts of familial relationships and the relative absurdity of a search for one’s absolute genetic roots.
It’s indicative of the film’s easy charm that these relationships are acknowledged and even acted on, but never consummated -- like a TV sitcom, the ensuing zaniness doesn't jeopardize the essential happy family that seems to be key to the director's thesis.
