Bristol Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, England.
The 70 acre (280,000 m²) harbour was created by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon in the centre of the city, giving it the name Floating Harbour as it is not affected by the tides.
Bristol Harbour was the original Port of Bristol, but as ships, and their cargo, increased in size, it has now been largely replaced for commercial purposes by docks at Avonmouth and Portbury, 5 km downstream at the mouth of the River Avon.

Prior to this, the whole of Bristol harbour had been tidal with a rise and fall of the water level of over thirty feet, and with vessels resting on the mud at low tide.
The Floating Harbour had been 'floated' on private investment, and the investors wanted a good return on their money so they trebled the port dues.
And until the construction of the Floating Harbour, the rivers had been scoured twice daily by the tidal flow ; after 1807 the only flow of water was from the currents of the rivers themselves.

Prior to the construction of the Floating Harbour (between 1804 and 1809), Canon's Marsh was protected from flooding by a system of defences that included banks and ditches, as depicted on 17th-century plans of Bristol.
The Floating Harbour was built to maintain a more or less constant water level along this section of the River Avon.
Excavations by the Floating Harbour uncovered a clay bank, which dated from at least the 18th century and formed part of the flood defences that protected Canon's Marsh.
