Floating oil production system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Common abbreviations for major types of floating production systems are FPSO (floating production, storage, and offloading system), FSO (floating storage and offloading system), and FSU (floating storage unit).
Floating production systems are large ships (about one half of existing systems are converted oil tankers) equipped with processing facilities and moored to a location for a long period.
The oil is stored in the hull of the FPSO and periodically offloaded to shuttle tankers.

Floating Production Storage and Offloading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oil is accumulated in the FPSO until there is sufficient amount to fill a transport tanker at which point the transport tanker connects to the stern of the floating storage unit and offloads the oil.
A FPSO have the capability to carry out some form of oil separation process obviating the need for such facilities to be located on an oil platform.
The world's largest FPSO is the Kizomba A, it has a storage capacity of 2.2 million barrels.

Floating Production Systems (FPSOs) - Production on Drillships - Other Topics
The first true monohull FPSO in the North Sea was the Petrojarl 1, delivered in 1986, and was intended to be a production test vessel with a small crude oil storage capability.
In certain FPSO projects, the review found, there is potential to combine the cargo tank blanketing system with the topsides production plant in order to recover VOCs, and also to integrate this with a flare recovery system (provided that there is a disposal route for gas, via export or reinjection).
By pumping from the FPSO to the tree and drilling vessel or from the drilling vessel to the FPSO, all equipment is purged of hydrocarbons and allowed to flood to hydrostatic pressure.

CB&I : Floating Production Storage and Offloading
Floating production storage and offloading systems (FPSO) are gaining importance as energy companies develop fields in deeper water and more remote locations.
FPSO projects present special design challenges because the vessel, topsides and associated systems must often withstand powerful currents and harsh weather conditions.
CBandI is a leading supplier of FPSO units to the offshore oil and gas industry.

OSD - SN3/2005 - Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) - Mooring Inspection
It explains why they need to ensure that the top sections of their mooring chains are not subject to excessive wear that can affect the integrity of the mooring system.
Essentially, the mooring chain is directed through a carefully designed trumpet that has the ability to rotate about a horizontal axis and thus accommodate the vertical motions of the FPSO without transferring significant bending or twist into the mooring chain.
Operators of FPSO and FSU installation need to be aware of such occurrences, and to ensure that they have suitable inspection routines in place.

The objectives of the workshop are to (1) promote an open and comprehensive discussion of experiences and concerns based on FPSO operations worldwide, (2) identify operational and regulatory issues and successful practices that have resulted from this experience, and (3) identify mitigation measures or technology needs to address these concerns.
We are holding the workshop to assess if FPSOs are viable and acceptable options for the Gulf of Mexico and other offshore areas.
These presentations will be followed by a session of panels from industry, FPSO contractors and certification agencies to respond to issues presented from the international panel presentations and discussions.
