The most significant population decrease between 1981 and 1991 was in Harris (these figures include the island of Scalpay) representing a fall in population of 11%.
Whilst Harris experienced the same rate of decline between 1991 and 2001, Barra and Vatersay also saw a decline of 11% over the same time period whilst figures for South Uist (which includes the island of Eriskay) report the highest drop in population of 15%.

has nine lochs and permits are available from the Barra Community Co-op (01871 810 354) or the Tourist office (336).
I have not tried Barra yet but BS reports that trout in Loch Tangusdale "average 2lb".

The Outer Hebrides or Western Isles (officially known by their Gaelic name, Na h-Eileanan Siar) comprise an island chain off the west coast of Scotland.
The name for the UK Parliament constituency covering this area is Na h-Eileanan an Iar, whilst the Scottish Parliament constituency for the area continues to be known as Western Isles.
The islands were under Norwegian rule for about 200 years until sovereignty was transferred to Scotland in the Treaty of Perth in 1266, which followed the Battle of Largs in 1263.

Looking west across the Sound of Barra I can see the little island of Lingay sitting in the sandy bottomed shallow blue water, so shallow that small patches of underwater weed appear as dark green loose carpets on a golden floor.
To the south west, the Island of Fuday and beyond the great sandy beach on Barra, used as the airstrip and known as Traigh Mhor.
A gust of wind blows me round and I look back down the little glen known as The Parks.
