  Encyclopedia: Floodland
Floodland is the album released by The Sisters of Mercy in 1987, complete with heavy production, layers of synthesizer, choral singing, and the drum machine Doktor Avalanche.
Floodland sees The Sisters of Mercy becoming the artistic output of one man, lead singer and songwriter Andrew Eldritch, with his former bandmates off in other bands such as The Mission and Ghost Dance.
The album arguably sent the Gothic genre spiraling away from the guitar-driven sound of the early and mid 1980s and inspired the next wave of goth bands such as London After Midnight and Switchblade Symphony.

It's a role that suits Eldritch down to the trembling ground, giving rein to the flest of ironies and setting that absurd Hades boom of a vocal so deep that you often have to oxyacetaline the meaning from the words as they sit, trapped in the mix like bodies in tangled chassis.
Floodland is a contradiction in terms, an edifice to decay and, as vigilante of the end of everything, Eldritch unleashes all his paranoia and obsession.
Facing up to that, Floodland is a triumph of sorts, neither optimistic enough to suggest there's a Noah's Ark nor pessimistic enough to accuse us all of navigating like a ship of fools.

"Floodland", however, found Andrew forging ahead into moody cinematic dance club land, and it is considered by many to be an essential Goth-electronica-New Wave hybrid.
The very first thing one might notice about "Floodland" is that it is every bit as grandiose, sweeping, majestic, etc., as the previous album was gloomy and brooding.
Andrew hated the association people made between his work and the Gothic movement, and it seems that "Floodland" was his attempt to distance himself from the fl-clad, bat-winged multitudes.

This is their second album and it was actually released in 2001 on NSM but now it is being re-released by Wait And Bleed Records with distribution through Napalm Records.
Dark, deep vocals and melancholic guitar melodies are the trademarks of this band and even though this album probably ends up in the rock category there are obvious traces of metal in their music.
There are deep emotions at play in every song of the album and unlike many other gothic rock bands Floodland varies their music quite a lot which keeps up the listener's interest for most of the fifteen tracks.

 Floodland (Sisters of Mercy)
This was my first Sisters of Mercy album, and, as such, I have a soft spot for it; it's certainly not my favorite work of theirs, but that doesn't really mean a lot in that every LP they released seemed to have caught them in vastly different periods of their overall sound.
Floodland shifts the emphasis from the struming, harpsichord-like guitars of their previous album to driving basslines and echoing, snare-heavy drum rhythms; in fact, the percussion, at least in my opinion, seems to be the focus of it.
Floodland is just a slightly different taste of the band, and, typical to them, interesting, catchy, cohesive and satisfying.

Floodland marked the return of The Sisters of Mercy, though in a much changed form, and many of the songs are contemplative in nature, viewing with Eldritch's trademark objectivity the wreckage of the previous few years.
Hence, the floodland is the flotsam and jetsam of these twin apocalypses.
This is also a comment on the difficulty Eldritch found in conforming to the idea of being part of a couple.

But just listen to some of these huge choruses, complete with layered, overdubbed vocals, fluid, imaginative guitar riffs, danceable beats, and operatic choirs, without ever losing that slightly dark edge, thanks mainly to lead singer Andrew Eldritch's stunted, forboding bartione.
A minor additional fault of Floodland is that while during the first half the intensity builds up really well, it reaches the peak with "This Corrosion", which is the midway point, and the second half is considerably less energetic.
The remaining songs aren't bad by any means, but they are all slow, very very darkly sombre excursions of heavily synthesized ambient keyboards.

While the goth scene in England was picking up commercial steam in the mid-'80s, the Sisters of Mercy may have seemed quiet, but they roared back with 1987's Floodland.
While the earlier Sisters releases were noisy, sometimes harsh affairs, Floodland is filled with lush production (thanks to Meat Loaf writer/producer Jim Steinman and the New York Choral Society) and lyric imagery that is both scary and glorious.
The slower tracks, like "Flood" and "1959," are some of the best ethereal sounds goth has to offer, and the downright regal "This Corrosion" is one of the best songs of the genre.
