  Floptical
Floptical drives, introduced late in 1991 by Insite Peripherals Inc., a company founded by Jim Shugart, combine magnetical and optical technologies.
Floptical disks were a high-capacity 3½-inch disks which provided 21MB of removable disk storage.
Around 70,000 flopticals are believed to be sold worldwide in the product’s life.

 Floptical at AllExperts
Floptical drives combine magnetic and optical technologies to store large amounts of data on a media similar to 3½-inch floppy disks.
The original Floptical technology was introduced late in 1991 by Insite Peripherals, a venture funded company set up by Jim Adkisson, one of the key engineers behind the original 5¼-inch floppy disk drive development at Shugart Associates in 1976.
To allow for a high degree of compatibility with existing SCSI host adapters, Floptical drives were designed to work as a floppy, and not as a removable hard disk.

Taken from the terms “floppy diskette” and “optical,” “floptical” is a type of floppy diskette that uses optical-magnetic tracking technology, which results in increased storage space compared to standard floppies.
A floptical has 15,000 tracks per inch and can store as much as 25MB of data, compared to 135 tracks per inch on a standard floppy, which holds as much as 1.44MB.
Although floptical drives and diskettes are still being used, they are no longer being made.

 Sflp(HW)
Very high density disks (VHD or floptical disks) are special, preformatted, combined optical/magnetic media; they are hard-formatted by optical means, allowing magnetic data to be read and written at a much higher density than on normal disks.
As an example, the minor device number for the block special device file for a second floptical drive using HD disks is 129 corresponding to a bit pattern of ``10000001''.
However, it is not possible to use a floptical disk as a removable hard disk; for example, you cannot partition a floptical disk using fdisk(ADM).

A method recited in any one of claims 5-7 wherein said floptical medium is a floptical disk, said floptical disk having stitches said debris remaining in said stitches prior to said spraying, said spraying traversing from an inside to outside radius, each stitch being sprayed by said gas for at least several times.
The apparatus for removing debris from a floptical medium after laser etching comprises a rotating means, a chuck for rotating the floptical medium and a sprayer for spraying a low-temperature gas containing ice crystals onto the rotating floptical medium at a predetermined angle.

The random access time of a floptical is about 80 ms, which is far faster than that of a floppy drive.
The great advantage to floptical drives is that they can store up to 20.8 megabytes on one formatted diskette, more data than you could fit on 14 high-density floppy disks.
Floptical storage costs about $1 per megabyte, which is about the same as for floppy disks.

 Floptical Disks
In the days not too long before the Floptical drive it was normal to have a 2-floppy system with the program disk in one drive and the data disk in the other.
The Floptical disk was not a long-term success in that it disappeared after only a year or so.
Later (1996) a very similar technology, the LS120 drive with 120mb capacity and attaching to the IDE connector arrived on the scene and for obvious reasons stole the limelight for an equally short period until it in turn was replaced by the Iomega Zip drive, which was a (very) commercial success.

 INSITES 20MB FLOPTICAL DRIVE READS 1.44MB DISKS - CBRonline.com
High capacity floppy disk drives have regularly been announced or previewed by manufacturers over the past decade, but have not made much of a mark up to now, because they were seldom compatible with the low-capacity disks widely in use.
According to Microbytes Daily, Insite will ship limited quantities of its Floptical drives, which use optical technology for precision positioning before the magnetic heads take over, and it plans to start volume production of the drive in April 1991 at an OEM price of $325.
The disks - to be made by Xidex Corp and Verbatim Corp - have embedded optical tracks and a closed-loop servo motor to increase the storage capacity of the magnetic disk.
