SAN MATEO, Isabela—After 20 years of working at the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in this town, an electrical engineer and his wife resigned from their jobs to venture into full time farming, but only after seeing a young cousin succeed in swine raising.
The engineer Mamerto B. Rarangol, 52, comes from a landed family in this town, but admitted it never occurred to him that farming is indeed a lot better than being employed in the government, where one signs a contract to remain poor the rest of his life upon entering public service.
One of his uncles, Dr. Flor B. Mandac, told The Manila Times that Rarangol was probably enjoying his work at the NIA all along such that he was already contented with his salary.
