Born Florence Annie Bridgwood in Hamilton, Ontario, she was the child of Charlotte Bridgwood, a vaudeville actress who went by the name Lotta Lawrence.
Lawrence, declaring she was alive and well and was making The Broken Oath, a new movie for his IMP Film Company to be directed by Harry Solter.
Lawrence's inventions were not patented, and others in the rapidly expanding auto industry developed their own versions.

Lawrence got her first film part in 1907 in “Daniel Boone” and went on to make more than 250 films, at first, most of them short, small-time productions known as “one-reelers,” which were typically shot in one week or less.
Lawrence never patented her inventions, but improved versions were soon seen all over and by 1939, the Buick made electrical turn signals standard in all its cars.

Florence had joined Vitagraph in 1906, known as 'the Vitagraph girl' she was one of the most popular actresses of the time.
In 1913 Florence Turner left Vitagraph to set up a film company in England which surprised a lot of people as the British film industry was considered inferior to the US film industry at that time.
Florence Lawrence dropped of the face of the planet at the time of the move and it was soon circulating that she had been killed in a car accident by the newspapers.

In 1912 the Victor Film Company was formed by movie star Florence Lawrence and her husband, Harry Solter.
At a time when actors received no film credits, Carl Laemmle of the IMP Film Company had began promoting Lawrence’s name and image, making her into America's first movie star.
Harry Solter had already been directing Florence Lawrence at IMP and with their own studio, he made a large number of film shorts starring his wife, many of which co-starred Owen Moore.

Lawrence was replaced at IMP by another young Canadian actress and veteran of the Biograph Studios, D.W. Griffith's favorite, Mary Pickford.
Her movie wealth had disappeared during the stock market crash; although she may have invented the turn signal (her mother patented the automatic windshield wiper), she had never patented or received any money for her work.
