Florestan I, Prince of Monaco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Florestan I ( October 10, 1785– June 20, 1856) was Prince of Monaco from October 2, 1841 until his death.
Florestan was never prepared to assume the role of prince—he had been an actor in the Theatre de l’Ambigu-Comique— and the real power during his reign lay in the hands of his wife, Caroline Gilbert of Lametz.
He was the second son of Prince Honoré IV, and succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother, Honoré V.

 history
It was he who persuaded his nephew to take the title of "Prince" and "Lord of Monaco" (1612), titles which were recognized by the Spanish Court and passed on to his successors.
On the death of his wife ten months later, he was recognized as Prince of Monaco with the title of Jacques I, then held the regency during the minority of his elder son, the future Honoré III, in favor of whom he abdicated on 7th November 1733.
Monaco thus became, in spite of the small area of its territory, an important place whose possession was to become the subject, during the three centuries which followed, of continual strife, capture and recapture by the representatives of the two parties, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines.

Science Fair Projects - List of the Princes of Monaco
It is not to be confused with the ruling Prince's title Sovereign Prince of Monaco, from which the first word is commonly dropped; or with the title of the heir apparent or presumptive to the throne, Hereditary Prince of Monaco.
Prince of Monaco is a title given to certain male members of the royal family of Monaco.
The current ( 2005) heir to the throne of Monaco is heir presumptive Princess Caroline of Monaco, or Caroline, Princess of Hanover as she prefers; the Hereditary Princess of Monaco.

Antoine, who in 1714, after an appeal on the part of the Duke of Savoy to the Assembly General of Utrecht, which referred it to the Courts of France and England, was obliged to renew the homage due from the Princes of Monaco to the Dukes of Savoy, for Mentone and Roccabruna.
Augustino Grimaldi, Bishop of Grasse, became the guardian of this prince during his minority, and in order the better to avenge himself on the murderers of his brother Lucien, he deserted Francis I. of France, and swore allegiance to the emperor Charles V., whence began the Spanish protection of Monaco.
On the death of Augustino in 1532, Stefano Grimaldi succeeded to the guardianship of the prince.

Nevertheless, the princes of Monaco maintained ties with France; Honoré (1778-1841), the eldest son of Honoré IV, was made a duke-peer under the Restoration (Napoleon had made him a baron in 1810); he succeeded his father as Honoré V in 1819 but continued to sit in the French House of Lords.
The territory of the principality of Monaco is unalienable.
In case of incapacity, the reigning Prince can, by a sovereign ordinance, delegate the exercise of his powers to the hereditary Prince if his is of age or, lacking one, to his spouse, or, lacking one, to the closest heir of age in the succession order.

Following her premature passing away, her husband became Prince of Monaco under the name of Jacques I. However, it was not long before he abdicated in favor of his still minor son Honore III.
