The florets are unisexual or bisexual and have usually two or three barely recognizable structures called lodicules that may represent a vestigial whorl of perianth that forces the lemma and palea apart during anthesis, thereby facilitating exsertion of the stamens and stigmas.
In this case the florets are enclosed by a cluster of numerous coalescing bristles that are very effective in aiding dispersal of the fruits by tangling in the fur of animals or feathers of birds.
The lemma of the fertile (terminal) floret is indurate.

Consequently, the androecium is represented in the florets of the ear and the gynoecium is represented in the florets of the tassel, even though either of these whorls is absent in the functional florets.
Within the glumes each floret is further enclosed by a pair of thin scale-like bracts - the lemma (located adjacent to the glume) and a palea (located opposite to the lemma and adjacent to the palea of the other floret in the spikelet).
Within each floret, two of the three stamens are located adjacent to the margins of the palea; the third stamen is located adjacent to the midline of the lemma and is flanked by two lodicules.

Inflorescences of paired spikelets, one sessile and the second pedicellate (the pedicellate spikelet often reduced to a sterile floret or a small glume, or rarely entirely absent); glumes hard or bony in texture; fertile lemmas membranous, much thinner in texture than the glumes; awns usually present (sometimes early deciduous) and borne from the fertile lemmas.........................................................................................................................
Glumes as long as the lowest (1st) floret and usually as long or longer than all florets; lemmas indistinctly many-nerved; lemma-awn somewhat flattened dorsiventrally and distinctly twisted, and arising from just below the distinctly bifid apex of the lemma..........
Spikelets disarticulating in pairs (the unit of dispersal is then a spikelet pair), one sessile on the main rachis, and one (or often 2 if at the terminus of an inflorescences branch) pedicellate.

BD1 specifies SM identity by repressing indeterminate branch fate within the lateral domain of the SM [9] and plays a crucial role in mediating the transition from spikelet to floret meristem during maize ear development [10].
Each rice spikelet contains a single floret, a pair of empty glumes and a pair of rudimentary glumes in contrast to the pair of glumes and two florets present in maize but it is still to be resolved whether empty glumes or rudimentary glumes are analogous to maize glumes [5,13,29].
The BD1 gene mediates the transition from a spikelet to a floret meristem during maize ear development [9,10] and its expression is temporally and spatially regulated during spikelet and floret initiation [9].
