  Oscar-winner to shoot Bengali film
Gallenberger, who won the 2001 Oscar for Best Short Film for I Want To Be, hopes to complete shooting by the end of April.
Florian and I decided Bengali could be the best language to express the conflict of emotions," Preuss said.
Gallenberger has hired a Bengali communicator for a crash course in the language for non-Bengali members of his 100-member crew, which include 10 Germans.

He chose the actors to play the young Ravi and Masha from poor Calcutta children; they are both outstanding in their portrayal of two strong-minded youngsters for whom destiny has tragic things in store.
Gallenberger then set about finding locations in the city which would reflect the period, both in the ghastly sweatshop conditions of the carpet factory, as well as the more genteel locations needed for the later period when Ravi’s life takes a turn for the better in post-Independence India.
At times it verges on the melodramatic and one assumes Gallenberger is pitching it as much to an Indian audience, who lap this sort of thing up, as he is to Westerners.

Young Germany: To Hollywood and back
For Germany’s own Florian Gallenberger, the dream became reality in 2001, when “Quiero ser” (I want to be) — the film he produced as his graduation assignment — beat out the four other nominees in the live-action short film category to secure him the Oscar.
Born in Munich in 1972, Gallenberger, who now lives in Berlin, had an early start in the film industry, appearing from the age of five in various roles in feature films, TV productions and theater plays.
Choosing to pursue a career as a screenwriter and director, Gallenberger attended the Munich Academy for Television and Film (HFF/M) from 1992 to 1999.

That is precisely what Florian Gallenberger's "Shadows Of Time" is - a classic example of a truly global mode of filmmaking.
The Oscar-winning Gallenberger, who was in Goa last year as a jury member, borrows liberally from Indian cinema conventions - childhood love, forced separation, lifelong pining, narrative contrivances, emotional tugs, the works - but pitches them at a much lower frequency than typical Bollywood movies do and comes up trumps.
It is difficult, for instance, to miss a pre-Independence era hand-pulled rickshaw with 'Kolkata' written on it - but Gallenberger gives the film enough fluidity and style not to let these minor glitches assume uncontrollable proportions.

Of course, not all the performers speak their Bengali to perfection - after all, Irrfan and Narayanan aren't native Bengali speakers - but Gallenberger shows the prescience to give them characters that have their roots outside the state.
But it isn't enough to prevent them from drifting apart, reuniting, drifting apart again, all through the rest of their lives.
In this discourse on the role time - past, present and future - plays in the life of humans, Gallenberger abjures the sentimentalism that one associates with such sagas and settles for an even tone that adds to the overall emotional impact of the film.

The two make a promise early on to reunite once they are adults, a plan that turns out to be fought with complications.
Director Florian Gallenberger's ease behind the camera is evident right from the film's opening frames, and the first-time filmmaker does a wonderful job of imbuing this tale with a distinct sense of style.
And though Shadows of Time does go on a little bit longer than necessary - Gallenberger's screenplay occasionally seems to be trying a little too hard to keep Ravi and Masha apart - that's a small complaint for a film that's as effective as this.
