A representative must be at least 21 years of age, must be a resident of the district in which he or she will serve, and must be a resident of Florida for at least two years before being qualified to run for election.
The Speaker of the House is elected by his or her fellow representatives for a two-year term.
He or she has the power to preside over the chamber during a session, to appoint committee members and chairs of committees, to influence the placement of bills on the calendar, and to rule on procedural motions.

Tallahassee Florida: As the Florida Legislature adjourned at 11:50 pm on Friday May 5, the 60th day of the Legislative Sessions, the hope to put Slot Machines in the Hollywood Florida Greyhound Track Died in the Florida House of Representative.
The House bill eliminates a proposal to give the city of Hollywood $1,500 per machine to offset the impact of the industry on its community.
The House and Senate bills also include a provision that would require the greyhound tracks to report dog injuries and fatalities and remove a provision that requires dog tracks to operate a race schedule of 350 days a year, allowing the Hollywood Greyhound Track to reduce its racing schedule and still operate slots year round.

Opticians from all over the state rang the phones off the hook in the legislative offices so much so that the lobbyist for the large optical retailers was unable to find a sponsor for his amendment that would cut the important language out of our enforcement bill.
We still have one House and Senate committee to go before it is heard on the floor by both chambers plus the Governor will need to sign it into law.
Professional Opticians of Florida is the only group that is working for you to stop the deregulation of our profession and is fighting for better enforcement of our practice act.
