The Florida Parishes lie east of the Mississippi River and north of lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain in the southeastern portion of the state.
For example, in East and West Feliciana parishes, planters from the southeastern states established a plantation economy whose landscape was characterized by houses in the Federal and Greek Revival styles.
While Washington Parish developed at the hands of the Uplanders (and a thriving lumber industry which arrived around the turn of the 20th century), the area of the Florida Parishes bordering Lake Pontchartrain owes its fame to its role as a health and vacation resort.

The Florida Parishes, however, were disputed territory, for the Spanish had claimed the entire gulf coast many years before.
During the disputed years of the last quarter of the 18th century the area of Livingston Parish was settled by Acadians fleeing English tyranny in Canada, loyalists fleeing the American Revolution on the east coast and even Germans moving north from French-established colonies on the west bank of the Mississippi River.
The parish was named after Edward Livingston, a member of a prominent New York family who moved to New Orleans in 1803, eventually became a senator, a minister to France, Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson and also reformed much of the criminal and civil code of the state.

 Greensburg Land Office
The Greensburg Land Office, one of the three oldest public buildings in the Louisiana Florida Parishes, is an excellent example of a small, rural office building in the Greek Revival style.
In 1812 Congress organized a land district out of the Florida Parishes, but there were no provisions made for surveying the private claims and public lands in the area.
It was here that Florida Parish residents applied for American patents to their lands, a step that was part of the "Americanization" process of Louisiana.

 LSU AgCenter . Florida Parishes Dairy Producers Stung By Hurricane Katrina
Louisiana’s dairy farms, mostly located in the Florida parishes of Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Helena, apparently have been hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.
Gary Hay of the LSU AgCenter’s Dairy Science Department said milk producers were forced to dump milk because they were without enough electric power to operate their coolers, and trucks were unable to pick up the milk from farms.
In the Florida parishes alone, more than 250 farms produced milk worth more than $62 million last year.
