  Florida scrub jay: Threatened
And as one Florida scrub jay demonstrated by landing on the little boy's head, these jays are known to be friendly enough to eat nuts and seeds from the palm of a bird lover's hand.
Florida scrub jays don't do well in damp and dark forests, so the dry, sandy, open locations prevalent along the Florida peninsula are what they call home.
As most of the scrub habitats are urbanized, considerably destroying and fragmenting the Florida scrub jay habitat, other factors contribute to the demise of the threatened species.

Wildlife Viewing - Species Spotlight - Florida Scrub Jay
The Florida scrub-jay is a 12-inch-long, blue and gray crestless jay that lacks the white wing spots and tail feather tips of the more common and widespread blue jay.
Florida scrub-jays live in family groups composed of a breeding pair, their offspring from years past and present, and sometimes even birds "adopted" from other families.
Because it is often difficult to determine a jay's sex or age in the field, marking each bird being studied with a unique set of colored plastic and aluminum leg bands is required.

 Audubon WatchList - Florida Scrub-Jay
It is no secret that land in Florida is in high demand and thus the species' sensitive habitat is being lost to housing and suburban development, citrus groves, and pastures.
For example, Audubon of Florida is assisting the Pinellas County Utilities in the management of a 12,000-acre site to restore the oak scrub habitat with the hope of increasing the Florida Scrub-Jay population.
Florida Audubon has played a key role in the protection, research and management of the Florida Scrub-Jay and have developed a recovery resolution plan.

Space Coast Birding - Florida Birding Experiences
The second largest refuge in Florida, MINWR and its surrounding waterways offer a sanctuary for a rich abundance of plants and animals from both the tropical and temperate climate zones; along its western edge is the Indian River Lagoon, North America's longest and most biologically diverse estuary.
The Refuge consists of 140,000 acres of salt marsh, freshwater impoundments, brackish estuaries, hardwood hammocks, pine flatwoods and scrub.
Wood ducks and Florida mottled ducks are found year-round, and the marshes are used extensively in fall and winter by migratory waterfowl and shorebirds.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - Titusville Florida
The remaining lands consist of coastal dunes, scrub oaks, pine forests and flatwoods, and palm and oak hammocks.
Each year, thousands of acres of upland and marsh habitat are prescribed burned to rejuvenate the vegetation, add nutrients to the soil, and control woody vegetation such as willows that invade impoundments.
Fire is a very useful tool in managing scrub oak habitat where species such as Florida Scrub Jays, eastern indigo snakes, and gopher tortoises occur.
