The Florida Everglades is a subtropical marshland located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, specifically in parts of Monroe, Collier, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Broward counties.
In 1850 under the Arkansas Bill, or Swamp and Overflow Act, practically all of the Everglades, which the state had been urging the federal government to drain and reclaim, were turned over to the state for that purpose, with the provision that all proceeds from such lands be applied to their reclamation.
Six canals were begun under state control in 1905 from the lake to the Atlantic, the northernmost at Jensen, the southernmost at Ft.

Excluding the easternmost two blocks, SR 9336 was (with SR 997) part of the former SR 27, which connected Flamingo, Florida in the Everglades to US 27.
The two State Roads met at the corner of Palm Drive and Krome Avenue (the current eastern terminus of SR 9336) in Florida City, two blocks to the west of US 1.
The designation of SR 906 was established in 1945 and lasted until the mid-1980s, when it was merged with the east-west segment of the former SR 27 to form SR 9336, which was in turn shortened to its current configuration a decade later.

The only highway access to the main part is Florida State Road 9336 and its extension in the park, running 38 miles (61 km) from Florida City to the coast at Flamingo.
Everglades National Park is surrounded by the urban and agricultural areas of Miami, Homestead, and Florida City to its east, the Florida Straits and Florida Keys to its south, the Gulf of Mexico to its west and Big Cypress National Preserve to its north.
A tram road which starts and ends at this center extends about seven miles from the northeastern border of the park into the Shark River Slough, an extensive freshwater slough that flows from Lake Okeechobee (north of the park) to the southwestern coast of Florida.

As part of a series of studies on Florida fishes, we are researching age and growth patterns and population dynamics of selected common large-bodied fishes inhabiting south Florida canals.
All five species are common to abundant in many south Florida freshwater habitats and most are predators that prey on other fishes and various crustaceans (i.e., crayfish and shrimp).
In addition to the application of the life-history data to modeling and to interpretation of the data time-series, these data represent new information about the adaptations of many of these species in wetland habitats that form the southern extent of their geographic ranges.
