  FPL | Florida Panther
Florida panthers are large, tawny-colored cats, once plentiful throughout the southeastern U.S. Today, the remaining 30 to 50 roam only in the remote cypress swamps and hardwood hammocks of Florida south of Lake Okeechobee.
The Florida panther is on the brink of extinction.
Florida panthers are killed by cars and trucks, particularly on State Road 29 and Alligator Alley (I-75), and - although it is against the law - hunters still shoot panthers occasionally.

The objective of the research is to enable wildlife officials to re-establish Florida panthers as a self-sustaining population in the release area.
Since Florida panthers also readily prey on feral hogs and other small mammals, their rate of predation on white-tailed deer would be reduced by the rate the cats prey on other animals.

SOFIA - ATLSS Project - Florida Panthers - Abstract
Panther survival is threatened by habitat loss and degradation, geographical isolation, disease, and problems associated with small population size, including inbreeding and sensitivity to stochastic events.
Recent demographic trends in the panther population are in sharp contrast to earlier observations, necessitating a thorough reevaluation of rules and parameters in light of changes in the population.
Panther distribution patterns previously attributed to habitat suitability now appear to have resulted from dynamics associated with limited dispersal potential in a small, inbred population with low reproductive rates living in a barrier-rich environment.
