		Pampanga derived its name from the Kapampangan words "pangpang ilog" meaning "riverside" where the early Malayan settlements were concentrated along the Rio Grande de la Pampanga.
		Pampanga, one of the richest provinces in the Philippines, was re-organized as a province by the Spaniards on December 11, 1571.
		Pampanga which is about 850 square miles in area and presently inhabited by more than 1.5 million people, had its present borders drawn in 1873.

		Pampanga's present borders were more or less established by 1873, after undergoing several alterations which either subtracted from (in most cases) or added to its present land area of 850 square miles (smaller than most U.S. counties).
		The Pampanga towns of Bamban, Capas, Concepcion, Tarlac, and Victoria, which were under the Commandancia Militar, never reverted to Pampanga; instead they became part of the new province of Tarlac, which was created in 1874.
