Count Claudius Florimund de Mercy (1666-1734), Imperial field marshal, was born at Longwy in Lorraine, now in France.
Mercy was killed on the 29th of June at the Battle of Parma while personally leading his troops.
He was the foster father of Florimund Count de Mercy d'Argenteau, and his great-uncle was Franz, Freiherr von Mercy.

It is said that this was the residence of the Governor of Banat, after the Turks retreat, of the general Claudius Florimund Mercy.
It is known today that the general did not live in the "Mercy House", because he died on the battle field at Parme in 1734.
That s why it is supposed that the "Mercy House" was built later in the baroc style when the rest of Europe abandoned this style.

The Ottomans were evicted from the city by the Habsburg Imperial armies led by Prince Eugene of Savoy on 12 October 1716.
Eugene entered the city on 18 October and named one of his officers, Claudius Florimund Mercy, as governor of the city.
Timisoara was officially conceded to the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy by the Ottomans in the Treaty of Passarowitz of 1718.

Mercy was the executor of a plan developed by Prince Eugene to transport German Catholics into the invasion corridors and establish Banat as a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Mercy oversaw the building of a set of fortresses at key points in Banat and between 1722 and 1726, 15,000 settlers were transplanted into 46 German villages.

In the meantime Count Mercy had to move again against the Italians, French, and the Sardinians for the emperor in the war, so Baron von Engelshofen was his representative and also later named his successor (1733-1736, 1742-1752).
He had promoted the Italian settlement with love and the village where one made these Italian settlers the main residents was called “Mercy Dorff” by him, which is the single important memorial of the father of the German settlers in the Banat existing.
In the years 1768-69 a last large migration followed into the Banat under Maria-Theresia, this time principally from the southwest corner of the empire, where the Emperor Franz of Lorraine was a native and from where the first governor of the Banat, Count Mercy, and many competent leaders of the imperial army came from.

The dams from Costei and Topolovat, upstream of Timisoara, solved the flood problems of both rivers, the Timis and Bega, until nowadays because they are still functioning.
The agriculture developed and was part of the Count Mercy plans.

In the summer of 1717 Prince Eugene of Savoy led an attack on Belgrade, Serbia which had been occupied by the Turks.
During the seige the horse, later called the Belgrade Turk, was captured from the Bashaw of Belgrade by Claudius Florimund, Count of Mercy, who was a general under the command of the French Prince.
The count sent him to the Prince de Craon, who in turn presented him to Leopold, Duke of Lorraine (from 1690 to 1729).
