In the early 1990s, Ditmanson was superintendent of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Colorado, then served for four years as assistant superintendent of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Arizona and Utah.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is located in the mountains of central Colorado just west of Colorado Springs.
Although a few vertebrates and some snails have been found, it is the plants and insects which have made Florissant famous and for which the national monument was established.
The fossil-bearing layers are part of the Oligocene Florissant Formation, a volcanigenic unit about 34 million years old which sits atop the Wall Mountain Tuff, a welded tuff capping the billion-year-old Pike's Peak Granite.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, which is just a trifle too far west to be included on the main map, is shown on the reverse at the same scale as the main map.
The reverse continues the coverage southward, with almost the entire Indian Peaks Wilderness of Roosevelt National Forest included (most of the rest of the wilderness is shown on the other side, with a small portion of the extreme northwest excluded entirely), as well as large portions of adjacent recreational lands.
The map is bordered by Elevenmile State Recreation Area in the west, the town of Monument in the northeast, and Colorado Springs in the southeast.
