MBG: Research: Inventory of the Plants of Pakistan
Map of Pakistan, showing boundaries of the four provinces (Baluchistan, Sind, Punjab, and North-West Frontier), one territory (Federally Administered Tribal Areas), and the Pakistani-administered portion of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region (Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas).
Two of these provinces, the Southern Iranian and Sindian Provinces, belong to the Sudano-Zambezian Region (African Subkingdom, Paleotropical Kingdom), which extends west along the southern Arabian Peninsula through the Horn of Africa to eastern tropical Africa and across to the Atlantic coast of Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea.
The other three floristic provinces in Pakistan belong to the Irano-Turanian Region (Tethyan Subkingdom, Holoarctic Kingdom): the Northern Baluchistan and Western Himalayan Provinces in the Western Asiatic Subregion, and the Tibetan Province to the Central Asiatic Subregion.

Floristic province - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A floristic province is a geographic area with a relatively uniform composition of plant species.
Adjacent floristic provinces do not usually have a sharp boundary, but rather a soft one, a transitional area in which many species from both regions overlap.
Systems of floristic provinces have both significant similarities and differences with zoogeographic provinces, which follow the composition of mammal families, and with biogeographical provinces or terrestrial ecoregions, which take into account both plant and animal species.

 Wetland Plants
A floristic province is a large area with a relatively uniform flora, delineated by a tension zone in which many species reach a common range boundary (Curtis 1971).
The vegetation tension zone then is a band between two floristic provinces marked by the intermingling of species from both (Curtis 1971).
The two floristic provinces in Minnesota and Wisconsin are the "northern forest floristic province" and the "prairie- forest floristic province," which are illustrated by Figure 3.

Botanical News from the Russian Far East
Floristically it is much closer to the southern Siberian boreal flora than to the Hokkaido-Sakhalin flora.
The enrichment of flora with temperate elements during Atlantic and Subboreal and the existence of modern refugia in the South of Sakhalin explains the position of a boundary separating the Circumboreal and East Asian floristic areas far to the north of boundary separating boreal and temperate vegetation in the island sector of East Asia.
This results in floristic data that are burdened with a multitude of taxa and that are factually impossible to differentiate one from the other, even by a botanist specializing in plant and flora systematics.

The three northern provinces include elevations from 400-4000 m, whereas the southern provinces range from 400-5000 m and can be 30% covered by "puna" grasslands in their highest elevations (see CPD Site SA33).
The Chachapoyan province originally was covered mostly by moist premontane and lower montane forests, and includes some dry forest on its western and northern boundaries with the Marañón River.
The Tambo River province once had extensive areas of dry to moist premontane and montane forests, but the remaining forests are located mostly at lower elevations and in more humid areas; one sizeable lowland area, the Gran Pajonal, is a savanna maintained by human-induced burning (Scott 1978).

Part of the list proposed below is inspired by Miklos Udvardy classification of the Biographical Provinces in the World which was prepared by Unesco's Man and the Biosphere program, published in 1975 and updated in 1982.
Botanists and zoologists have developed other ecological land classification schemes; botanists have identified floristic provinces based on plant communities, while zoologists have identified zoogeographic provinces based on faunal communities.
Important applications of this information is in planning for future land uses and land conservation decisions.

The California Floristic Province (CFP) lies on the west coast of North America, mostly within the state of California (U.S.A.); however, small portions of south-western Oregon (U.S.A.) and north-western Baja California (Mexico) are included on the basis of similarities in flora and climate (Map 4)..
Many plants (especially herbs) that became isolated in topographic, edaphic, or other ecological islands in the CFP have diverged from their closest relatives in other physiographic or floristic provinces to become local endemics.
Floristic diversity in the CFP is highest in the Sierra Nevada and Transverse ranges and nearly as high in the Klamath Mountains and Coast ranges (Stebbins 1978a; Richerson and Lum 1980).
