Fynbos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fynbos in the Western regions is more rich and varied than in the Eastern regions.
Contrast it in size with the Holarctic kingdom, which incorporates the whole of the northern hemisphere apart from the tropical regions.
In many areas with Mediterranean climates, fynbos species are popular garden plants, in particular aloes and geraniums, and in cooler regions are used as window plants.

Cape floristic region - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cape floristic region is a floristic province of South Africa.
The Cape floristic region covers the Mediterranean climate region of South Africa Western Cape Province in the southwestern corner of the country, and extends eastward into the Eastern Cape Province, a transitional zone between the winter-rainfall region to the west and the summer-rainfall region to the east in Kwazulu-Natal Province.
Most of the region is covered with fynbos, a sclerophyll shrubland that is home to an amazing diversity of plant species, including many members of the Protea family (Proteaceae), Heath family (Ericaceae), and restios (Restionaceae).

Biodiversity Hotspots - Cape Floristic Province - Overview
Home to the greatest non-tropical concentration of higher plant species in the world, the region is the only hotspot that encompasses an entire floral kingdom, and holds five of South Africa’s 12 endemic plant families and 160 endemic genera.
The vegetation on the Cape is dominated by fynbos (an Afrikaans word for “fine bush”), a shrubland comprising hard-leafed, evergreen, and fire-prone shrubs that thrives on the region's rocky or sandy nutrient-poor soils.
Although the region was once covered by lush rain forest, climate changes around 15 million years ago resulted in the retreat of the forests.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Lowland fynbos and renosterveld (AT1202)
Floristically and structurally, the distinction between lowland and montane forms of fynbos and renosterveld is weak.
The Southeastern Coast Forelands extend from the Tsitisikamma region in the west, to Port Elizabeth at the eastern boundary of this ecoregion, coincident with the eastern boundary of the CFR.
This region is relatively complex topographically, comprising shale- and conglomerate-derived (Cretaceous) valleys and plains, extensive sandstone mountain footslopes, sandplains and calcareous coastal dunes.

Biodiversity Hotspots - California Floristic Province - Overview
The California Floristic Province is a zone of Mediterranean-type climate and has the high levels of plant endemism characteristic of these regions.
This region also holds a number of threatened endemic species such as the giant kangaroo rat and the desert slender salamander, and some of the last individuals of the Critically Endangered California condor can still be found here.
The region contains a wide variety of ecosystems, including sagebrush steppe, prickly pear shrubland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, juniper-pine woodland, upper montane-subalpine forest, alpine forest, riparian forest, cypress forests, mixed evergreen forests, Douglas fir forests, sequoia forests, redwood forests, coastal dunes, and salt marshes.

Floristic Projects at the Rocky Mountain Herbarium
Floristic efforts at the RM aim at not only adding to our knowledge in terms of presence or absence (the what), but also in terms of the distribution of a taxon within a project area (the where does it occur?
These data are entered into the RM plant specimen database and can be used in a geographical information system (GIS) to plot distribution maps and to analyze patterns of distribution among species and relative to other geographic data (surficial geology, soils, slope and aspect, topography, community types, etc.).
Floristic studies are frequently undertaken by graduate students with assistance from RM staff (curator Ron Hartman and herbarium manager Ernie Nelson) and consist of two summers of fieldwork.

Calumet Ecological Park Feasibility Study: Part II
The floristic quality index provides a measure of the ecological integrity of an area based on native vs. non-native species and is described by Swink and Wilhelm (1994) in "Plants of the Chicago Region".
Historically, the industry developed due to the region's symbiotic relationship with the rich hinterland—a crossroads where raw materials were received at the constructed harbors, processed in the plants, and distributed via the railroad.
The Calumet region’s greatest strength -- a diversity of interested and committed organizations -- is closely related to a critical weakness -- organizational fragmentation and an array of single purpose or geographically focused groups actively pursuing individual goals with little coordination.

Diversity Of Species Faces 'Ctastrophe' From Climate Change By Steve Connor
The wildlife havens that could be worst affected include the Cape floristic region of South Africa, the natural landscape of southwest Australia, the tropical Andes and the Atlantic forests of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
In the worst-case assessment, a doubling of carbon dioxide concentrations led to the extinction of 40 per cent of species in some of the hotspots - a potential loss of some 56,000 endemic plants and 3,700 endemic vertebrate species.
Sited at the southern-most tip of the African continent, the region is unique in terms of Mediterranean-type vegetation and its plants would find it difficult to escape rising temperatures.

In mountainous regions (due to greater diversity, to being on foot with backpack, and to the significant elevational relief), the interval for repeating the collecting cycle is about five miles and often there are many more stops along the way.
Following the publication of the Flora, an atlas of the region is planned using specimen databases established at herbaria throughout the region and the latest technologies in GIS and computer cartography.

NPWRC :: Floristic Quality Assessment of One Natural and Three Restored Wetland Complexes in North Dakota, USA
Floristic quality assessments rely on coefficients assigned to each plant species of a region's flora based on the conservatism of each species relative to others in the region.
To evaluate the effect of this subjectivity on floristic quality assessments, we performed separate evaluations of the native plant communities in a natural wetland complex and three restored wetland complexes.
Floristic quality indices (FQI) for the restored wetlands rarely exceeded 22 and usually reached maximums closer to 19, with higher values occurring again in the oldest restored complex; only two wetlands in the natural complex had an FQI less than 22.

 Great Basin--Mojave Desert Region
Anthropologists define the region by cultural attributes of the aboriginal inhabitants (d'Azavedo 1986), botanists by species composition of the vegetation (Billings 1951; Holmgren 1972; Vasek and Barbour 1990), and geologists by the structure of the land (Hunt 1967).
The sagebrush-grass zone is contracting because of the downward expansion of the pinyon-juniper zone in the central portion of the region (Blackburn and Tueller 1970) and by western juniper woodlands in the north (Burkhardt and Tisdale 1976; Miller and Wigand 1994; Miller and Rose 1995).
The aquatic invertebrate fauna in the region shares species with the adjacent regions, especially the Rocky Mountains; species that also occur in the Sierra Nevada are not as widely distributed in the Great Basin (Nelson 1994).

The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is located at the southern tip of the African continent and is uniquely the only floral kingdom to be located entirely within the geographical confines of one country.
Due to its concentration of endemic taxa, its large number of species, and its vulnerability to processes that threaten its unique biodiversity, the CFR is recognized globally as a biodiversity hotspot.
The rich biodiversity of the CFR is due to an extensive and complex array of habitat types derived from topographical and climatic diversity in the region's rugged mountains, fertile lowlands, simi-arid shrublands, and coastal dunes.

 Rainforest Biogeography
Some of the closest floristic similarities between rainforest regions are probably due to the exceptional dispersal abilities of certain plants that may have had their seeds carried across great distances by birds or ocean currents within the last few million years.
Consequently the region evolved its own very distinctive rainforest flora from the plant groups that happened to be present, including an important role for certain ancient conifer groups that had dominated the Gondwanaland forests before flowering plants existed.
Both floristically and geographically, it is very close to the Amazonian forests that lie to the east, but it has probably been completely separated from them for millions of years after the Andes grew up from beneath.
