  Florodora
Florodora was one of the first successful Broadway musicals of the 20th century.
Originally opened in London on November 11, 1899, it moved to New York in 1900 and ran for 552 performances.
A good deal of the success of the musical was attributed to the pulchritude of its sextet of chorines, called "the English Girls" in the score, but soon popularly dubbed the Florodora girls.

 Stage Musicals 1900-1910
The first theatrical sensation of the new century was the British musical comedy Florodora (1900 - NY 553), the story of a young woman seeking romance and the restoration of a stolen inheritance.
The original Florodora sextet – Daisy Green, Marjorie Relyea, Vaughn Texsmith, Margaret Walker, Agnes Wayburn, and Marie Wilson – inspired all sorts of publicity.
Florodora was revived on Broadway several times, including a 1920 production that updated the material and turned the sextet into flappers.

That play was a romantic musical about a perfume called florodora, which came from a plant called florodora, which was grown on the island of Florodora in the Philippines.
In fact, Florodora was one of the plays that made Broadway famous, as people started to look upon that street as the place of prestige for the famous actors and actresses of the stage to do their work.
But for the author of the book, Florodora, and for the writer of the play, we are told that all the riches that they gained from their phenomenal success, became gambling money, which resulted in poverty for them both, with neither of them able to recover what they once had for such a short time.

Florodora was Stuart's unparalleled success, and try as he could to repeat his successful recipe with this showstopper he never quite equalled the grade.
With Florodora for instance, Rubens provided the lyrics to half the songs as well as the music to 'I've an Inkling' and 'Queen of the Philippine Islands'.
It is also a mystery why Stuart would only conduct the first Act of the show on a first night yet later with a different show would spend two months of its run in the pit.

Leslie Stuart spent some of his earliest professional musical moments as a pianist at Manchester's Ship Inn and then, from the age of 14, as church organist for seven years at St John's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Salford and a further seven at the Church of the Holy Name in Manchester.
Florodora, written in collaboration with London's most fashionable librettist, Owen Hall, and produced by neophyte producer Tom Davis at the Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, was a musical-comedy sensation.
In his later years he continued to write, and although he would not show his final work, Nina, to anyone, both it and The Girl from Nysa were mooted for production both before and after his death without ever coming to the stage.
