She loved the Old Mill's woodwork, handrails worn smooth, the knot-free lumber and the function of the mill as the glue that once brought the community together.

 Portarlington Mill
Portarlington Flour Mill is on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Register with a State Classification.
The first flour mill was built at Drysdale, but the difficulty of land transport made Portarlington's water access attractive, and its handsome stone, steam flour mill, was built in 1857.
The life of the building as a mill was only seventeen years, as in the 1870's the wider Wimmera lands were opened for cultivation, and in 1874 the mill was closed and the machinery used for milling was sent to the Wimmera.

 Museum of Milling History
The early mills were no doubt highly imperfect: we know, for example, that the overshot water wheel of a fifth-century Athenian mill (figure 56) received its water from too great a height, and that its moving parts rubbed against the stone walls of its enclosure.
Please Note: This was the state of the art of flour milling in Germany (Figure 83) at the time Oliver Evans invented his improvements for automated flour milling, and in the early nineteenth-century when two German flour millers-millwrights came to America to steal the technology.
The sifted or bolted flour would fall through the bag, sock, or tube onto the floor of the mill, and the tailings would often flow into the mill stream where the bag collar was attached to an outside wall.

"Flour power" is the focus of the new Mill City Museum, constructed in the ruins of the 1880 Washburn A Mill, once the centerpiece of the Minneapolis flour empire.
When it was built, the Washburn A was the largest flour mill in the world, and the most technologically advanced in a city where more than 20 flour mills once towered along the banks of the Mississippi.
The flour mills stimulated a boom in larger farms, and by 1880, 70 percent of Minnesota's cultivated land - almost 4.5 million acres - was planted in wheat.

The Milling Process - Leonard I   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Al-though some flour is produced here, the goal in the break system is not to produce a lot of flour but to maximize separation of bran from endosperm.
Because the break rolls are at the beginning of the milling process, the quality of the work done here effects each subsequent step, thus determining both the yield of flour and the quality of that flour.
While straight and clear flours will have more protein than the patent flour from the same wheat on the same mill run, this additional protein is from the aleurone and germ, not gluten from the endosperm.

Flour Mills in Buffalo County Part I-The Gibbon Mill 1873-1941
The Union Pacific Railroad thought a flour mill in the new settlement of Gibbon was so important that it transported free of charge two carloads of machinery and lumber for its construction.
The mill not only encouraged the growing of wheat in the area, but was of financial importance to the settlers who could save the cost of the flour by growing the grain themselves, and also save the cost of freight to have their flour shipped in from other points.
In 1884 the Gibbon Mill was one of the first in the state to introduce the roller process of grinding, which increased their capacity to 60 barrels daily.

Riccarton Flour Mill - Christchurch City Libraries
The founder and builder of the mill was William Derisley Wood who arrived in Lyttelton aboard the Randolph, the second colonising ship to arrive here in December, 1850.
The mill race was cut across the loop and a weir was built to form the Mona Vale mill pond.
Grain was milled between imported French burr stones and, as had been the case with the earlier windmill, the demand for flour soon outstripped the supply, despite six 24-hour days being worked weekly.
