In '58, "Flower Drum Song" told the tale of mail-order bride Mei-Li, who with her father arrived in Chinatown at the behest of her intended, hepcat Sammy Fong.
But this is not your father's "Flower Drum Song," and instead we begin in China, where Mei-Li (Lea Salonga) watches her father tear down a banner of Mao and get dragged away by the Communists.
She is carrying with her a flower drum, which inspires her to hope for a better life.

11/6/02: Flower Drum Song Show and Album Review
Flower Drum Song has always been a sentimental favorite of movie musical fans, and yet there has never been a major theatrical revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's hit, despite the fact that it played for 600 performances in 1958 and was a successful movie in 1961.
Flower Drum Song has been perceived as out-dated, with its mail-order bride plot and quaint outsider-looking-in portrayal of the Asian characters.
However, there are some wonderful songs like "Love, Look Away" and "You are Beautiful." DRG Records is releasing the cast album of this production in early 2003, and this is probably the best way to enjoy the show.

And Flower Drum Song — which was originally inspired by the 1957 novel by C.Y. Lee — fits the festival like a cheongsam, because San Francisco is as prominent a character as any other, including Kwan’s scheming showgirl, Linda Low, or James Shigeta’s clean-cut Americanized frat boy, Wang Ta.

Talkin' Broadway Review: Flower Drum Song
Based on the novel by C. Lee, the original Flower Drum Song was a fully integrated musical, professionally and intelligently constructed with plenty of humor, a beautiful score, and a one-of-a-kind story about the generational conflicts among the Chinese in late 50s San Francisco.
The Flower Drum Song currently on view is much like chop suey, "everything is in it - all mixed up," to borrow a line from the original libretto which has been completely scuttled in a favor of a new one by David Henry Hwang.
Even if the songs themselves have been treated as chess pieces to be moved about indiscriminantly, hearing them sung in a theater by a good cast serves as a strong reminder of the power of good musical theatre writing.

The Community of Hungerford Theatre Company
It is hard to understand why Rodgers and Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song is infrequently chosen by amateur societies.
Hungerford's production had vivid, colourful costumes, a chorus of lively children who silently waited for their entrances and clever manipulation in the first act which had a flower boat drifting in front of Chinese strolling figures.
Jack Dillon's (Wang Ta) rich melodic sound gave the title song depth and sincerity, whilst Natalie Hyde's (Mei Li) performance captured exactly the deference of a Chinese girl and her clear, accurate musical voice made every song a delight.

Rodgers and Hammerstein did, however, also collaborate on three other musicals, “Me and Juliet”, “Pipe Dream”, and “Flower Drum Song”; all of which achieved financial success but not the fame of their five big hits.
Now, you’re probably wondering, why would anyone want to mount a revival of “Flower Drum Song” since it was not one of the team’s smash successes?
