Flower of Scotland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flower of Scotland was written by Roy Williamson of the folk group The Corries in 1966.
The introduction of Flower of Scotland was partly due to hostility amongst rugby and football fans toward the British national anthem God Save the Queen being used to represent Scotland, there being no other suitable anthem at the time.
However, one counter-argument is that Flower of Scotland is not backward looking at all, more an acceptance that "those days are past now, and in the past they must remain" and that Scotland can go forth and develop into a forward-thinking, successful country in its own right.

Scotland is one of four constituent nations which form the United Kingdom (the other three are England, Wales and Northern Ireland).
Scotland has given rise to many more famous people, notable in the arts, literature, the sciences and as inventors, philosophers, architects and so on, than would be expected for a country of such modest size and population.
Scotland was a wealthy country through until the beginning of the 14th Century, when Edward I of England (known as the "Hammer of the Scots") was determined to incorporate Scotland into the English crown.

A constituent nation of the United Kingdom, Scotland lacks an official, legislated "national song"; in fact there are several songs in use as "national songs" of Scotland.
The one most often considered as the unofficial national anthem (and most often presented as Scotland's anthem at sporting matches) is "Flower of Scotland", written by Roy Williamson for the popular folk group The Corries.
Other popular "national songs" of Scotland (and sometimes used as "unofficial national anthems") are "Scotland the Brave" (a traditional melody (sheet music) with lyrics by Cliff Hanley) and "Scots Wha' Hae" (another traditional melody with words by the national poet Robert Burns).

The lyrics of the song refer to the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 when Robert the Bruce (King Robert I) led a heavily outnumbered Scottish force to victory against the English invaders led by Edward II and thus guaranteed Scotland's independence for the next three hundred years or so.
An added attraction is that it can also call to mind the greatest victory of William Wallace, The Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, where an even more heavily outnumbered Scottish army humiliated the battle-hardened troops of Edward Langshanks (long legs), the father of Edward II.

Modern History Sourcebook: Flower of Scotland
If any song has been associated with Scottish nationalism in the 1970s and after, it has been The Flower of Scotland, made famous though its repeated performance the The Corries.
It is now used as Scotland's anthem for international sporting events (although it is not the "national anthem" - that remains God Save the Queen), and has largely displaced Scotland the Brave (see below for words).
As with a number of other Scottish patriotic songs, the lyrics commemorate the defeat of Edward II at Bannockburn in 1314 (see below for Robert Burns Scots Wha Hae, and Fields of Bannockburn).
