Based on the phenomenally successful novel by V.C. Andrews, "Flowers in the Attic" tells the tale of an all-too-perfect family that is thrown into financial turmoil when the bread-winning father dies in a car accident.
Mother (Victoria Tennant), fearing that she and her four children will soon be homeless, makes the none-too-wise decision to return home to the twisted mother and father she fled from some seventeen years prior.
Sure it has some atmosphere--mainly thanks to its creepy score--and the premise is fairly chilling, but the script is so laughably creaky that you spend most of the running time, rolling your eyes at line after line of unintended hokum--2 stars.

Sadly, the movie shies away from what made Flowers in the Attic such a hugely popular book--namely, the incestuous sex that began between the two older children, Cathy (Kristy Swanson, the movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams).
Instead, the movie insinuates incestuous longing in all directions: Cathy's father brings her special presents before he dies, Chris scrubs Cathy's back in the tub, Chris has a noticeably stronger attachment to their mother than Cathy does--not to mention that the grandmother whips the half-naked mother in front of the grandfather.
