  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Floyd County
Georgia's Floyd County, formerly home to many of the state's Cherokee Indians, was established on December 3, 1832, two years after the Georgia legislature passed a law extending its jurisdiction over the Cherokee territory in that part of the state.
Floyd, the eighty-eighth county in Georgia, was named for General John Floyd, statesman and Indian fighter.
Two years after Floyd County's inception, the county seat was moved from Livingston to a fertile area of land where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers meet to form the Coosa River; there, the city of Rome was born.

known as Floyd College, Georgia Highlands College is a nonresidential, two-year unit of the University System of Georgia and offers numerous transfer and career-oriented academic programs of study.
In 1968 the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized the establishment of Floyd Junior College, and Floyd County voters approved funds for the institution in a referendum held in November of that year.
The college also has joined resources with Coosa Valley Technical College, in Floyd County, to offer an associate of applied science degree in several business and health fields.

Floyd was a standout strong safety and punt returner at Eastern Kentucky University from 1978-81 and played on a Division I-AA National Championship team in 1979 and on teams that finished as runner-up in 1980 and 1981.
The quiet, unassuming Floyd, who came to Boone County last season after coaching at Bellevue for 12 seasons, including as defensive coordinator on the 1990 Class A state runner-up team, said he was surprised at his selection.
