Floyd Council was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on September 2, 1911, to Harrie and Lizzie Council.
Floyd was enticed by the blues very early on, learning the trade of the guitarist while still very young.
Floyd later began working with legendary blues artist Blind Boy Fuller in the 1930’s, earning him the nickname “Blind Boy Fuller’s Buddy.” ACR Records’ John Baxter Long invited Council to record alongside Fuller on a 1937 New York City session, after hearing him playing in Chapel Hill in January of that year.

Pink Floyd's management, looking at the wreckage of a band that was now without its lead guitarist, lead singer, and primary songwriter, decided to abandon the group and manage Syd as a solo act.
Pink Floyd at this point were still undergoing the metamorphosis that eventually turned them into London's premier psychedelic band, and it is useful to be able to map that change through such audio artifacts even though the sound may not be the best.

It was Syd who gave Pink Floyd its name, from albums by two Carolina blues artists, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, that were in his collection.
Such was his stature within the original lineup that few observers thought the band could survive his departure; in fact, the original group's management decided to keep Syd on and leave the rest of the band to their own devices.
