I volunteer at the Floyd County Museum located on the north side of the Square in Floydada, Texas.
After the County was organized application was made to the Postoffice Department for the establishment of a postoffice bearing the name of Floyd City; but it was rejected for the reason that there already existed a postoffice in Hunt County, in this State, called Floyd.
The similarity of names was too marked for the application to create a new postoffice of the name of Floyd City to be considered favorably by the postoffice establishing authorities at Washington.

Floyd is named for Dolphin Ward Floyd, who died on his 32nd birthday, March 6, 1836 defending the Alamo.
In the county, the population is spread out with 31.40% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county is bordered on the north by Swisher and Briscoe counties, on the east by Motley County, on the south by Crosby County, and on the west by Hale County.
In 1950 Floyd County farmers grew 2,758,000 bushels of wheat, and 47,332 bales of cotton.
In 1982, 98 percent of the land in the county was in farms and ranches, with 70 percent of the land under cultivation and 59 percent irrigated.

Floyd is on U.S. Highway 380 eight miles west of Greenville in west central Hunt County.
The arrival in Hunt County of good roads and automobiles during the first half of the twentieth century, however, facilitated travel to Greenville, the county's major town, and contributed to Floyd's decline.
Floyd reported a population of seventy from 1952 until the mid-1970s, and from then until 1990 a population of 220.

John Washington and Martha {Crawford} Smith came to Floyd County, Texas in 1891 a few graves were in the old Greymule Cemetery but that was several miles to the NW and across the bank of the Quitaque River.
Before his death John Smith deeded 2 acres to Floyd County so there would be a free burial ground for members of the family and any friend or stranger in the area who needed a burial plot.
She was cremated and scattered over her farm land on the south side of Smith Creek in Floyd County, Texas.
