Floyd Kalber, a television news anchorman whose career included stints on NBC's "Today" show and on two highly rated programs in Chicago, has died of emphysema, family members said.
Kalber was nicknamed "The Big Tuna" because his aura and power in the newsroom were perceived to be as great as the late Chicago mob boss Tony "Big Tuna" Acardo.
Kalber was able to mix rock solid authority with his pleasant, folksy demeanor to create a larger-than-life persona," said Steve Scott, president of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association.

Kalber was hired in 1960 by NBC News after a decade as the one-person news department of KMTV-TV in his native Omaha, Neb. Within a few months of his arrival at WMAQ-TV he began a 16-year run as the 10 p.m.
Kalber retired from the network in 1981, but was coaxed out of retirement in 1984 to help revive Chicago's WLS-TV by anchoring the 6 p.m.

During the summer of 1967, I was an intern at WMAQ-TV.
Back then the studios were in the Merchandise Mart; the evening news was anchored by Floyd Kalber; the weather was presented by Harry Volkman; Len O'Connor gave the commentaries, and Floyd Brown was the "golden voice" of the stations promos.
I mainly hung out with Scott Craig and Linda Noyle, who were producing documentaries about Chicago and Illinois.
