Fluent NEWS - Spring 2000 - Scottish Power Flue Gas Ducting Upgrade Increases Output and Reduces Maintenance
The “dirty” flue gases exiting the boilers pass along ducting encased by insulated cladding.
To minimize pressure drops in the flue gas ducting, which would, in turn, allow more power to be generated from the boiler.
Once the boiler was re-commissioned after the outage, gas flow rates through the flue gas ducting increased significantly and a 10 percent power generation improvement within the boiler, partly due to the CFD analysis, was noted.

When a gas flue is blocked, chances are very good that carbon monoxide will enter the home, creating a dangerous, even deadly, environment.
You could convert the fireplace to a wood burner without lining the chimney, but you would have to add a separate metal flue somewhere outside the chimney to properly ventilate the gas appliances.
Before you raise the fireplace off the floor, the chimney and firebox would have to be examined by a masonry contractor.

 Flue Gas Desulphurization
Flue gas is the air coming out of a 'channel' after combustion has taken place.
Flue gas desulphurization drastically removes sulphur dioxide from chimney emissions.
Another great flue gas treatment involves using sodium bicarbonate; this is proving to be the most effective method of flue gas desulphurization to date.

When To Clean A Chimney Flue
The flue collects creosote from smoke and must be cleaned periodically.
And check the flue, too, especially on exterior chimneys, where creosote builds faster than on interior chimneys because of lower outside temperatures.
The final (and most deadly) is a shiny, glaze-like coating on the flue that is virtually impossible to remove.

Keep doors open to the rest of the house from the room where you are using an unvented gas space heater or kerosene heater, and crack open a window.
For example, if a change was made in your heating system from oil to natural gas, the flue gas produced by the gas system could be hot enough to melt accumulated oil combustion debris in the chimney or vent.
Before each heating season, have flues and chimneys inspected and cleaned before each heating season for leakage and for blockage by creosote or debris.
