Fluidics is science and technology of the application of a fluid or compressible medium to transmit energy and signals.
The physical premices of fluidics are pneumatics and hydraulics, based on the theoretical foundation of fluid dynamics.
While the principles of pneumatics and hydraulics are millenia old, the second half of 20th century saw the application of fluidics to sophisticated control systems.

 Epocal Corporation - Fluidics-on-Flex™
This proprietary technology is a comprehensive approach to fluidics which truly achieves the one-step, lab-on-a-chip vision because it provides, for the first time, a rational and manufacturable means for integration of all of the necessary reagents to perform a complex assay.
The fluidic properties of an element are achieved by suitable design of: the element's shape, the dimensions of the flow channels or pores, the surface tension and zeta potential of element surfaces, and the location of flex electrode contacts and the power applied to them.
A typical fluidic element in this version of the technology contains nanoliter volumes of fluid capable of moving at flow rates of 0-100 picoliters per second.

The principal advantage of fluidic systems is that they can be designed to tolerate conditions under which electronic systems could not possibly operate.
Fluidic systems are also advantageous where the system output is to be a flow of fluid, as in an automobile carburetor.
Mechanical contractor Fluidics recently was notified by its broker, Marsh and Co., that its previous Experience Modification Rate of.742 has improved to.538.

Fluidic devices may be ‘digital' or ‘analogue' in operation.
From the logical design viewpoint a digital fluidic device equates with, for example, an electronic relay who contact may be either open or closed; or a transistor which is either conducting or not conducting.
Fluidic system design closely follows the same logical steps as those associated with the design of electrical or electronic systems.

Fluidics is an area of mechanical engineering which has tremendous utility in critical applications where electronic circuits cannot suit the environmental constraints, discusses Amol S. Gogate.
The principle of fluidics on which the first fluidic element was developed - the COANDA effect - was discovered accidently by Henri Coanda, a test pilot around 1910.
Manufacturing fluidic elements is quite a complex job since devices are often very small and extremely sensitive to dimensional changes.

A fluidic rectifier is a special kind of device in which the flow in one direction does not experience the same resistance as the flow in the opposite direction.
Acting in a similar way to a diode in an electronic circuit, a rectifier that can control the flow of fluids through microscopic channels would open up the possibility of developing more complex integrated microfluidic circuits for biotechnology applications.
The technique might be used in future devices that automate biochemical reactions with the fluidic equivalent of computer chips.

sci.nanotech Archives: Re: Partial design for macro-scale machining self-replicator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Since fluidics requires certain effects to occur (such as the Coanda effect, I believe) it is by no means a foregone conclusion that fluidics computers are possible at nanoscales, IMHO.
If you scale back up to the sizes where conventional fluids theory holds, you might lose the perceived advantage and be better off building an IC the "old-fashioned" way.
That's the main reason Drexler's designs are in the mechanical mode, which seems to retain enough of the properties of the macroscale to support more-or-less direct translation of designs.
