Flumpet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flumpet is a hybrid musical instrument blending qualities of the trumpet and flugelhorn.
It was inspired by the late Art Farmer, a virtuoso jazz musician who traveled with both a trumpet and a flugelhorn in his baggage.
The Monette Corporation designed the flumpet for Art Farmer in 1990.

David Monette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He has designed mouthpieces for Wynton Marsalis and Charles Schlueter, as well as tubist Chester Schmit.
Monette designed the flumpet, a combination of a trumpet and flugelhorn, for jazz musicians Art Farmer and Mark Isham.
A perfectionist, he has said that his vision is to create a trumpet with the "perfect sound", which, according to Monette, is a sound that "gets out of the way" of the connection between a musician and an audience.

Art Farmer, one of the more important second-generation be-bop musicians, an improviser who could say a great deal in a few notes on the trumpet and fluegelhorn and later on his own hybrid instrument, the "flumpet," died on Monday in Manhattan.
In the early 60's he often used the fluegelhorn, which has a warmer, creamier sound, suiting his lyricism and terseness.
Then in the early 90's he designed a mixture of the two instruments, the flumpet, which combined projection with warmth.

For years Art Farmer switched from trumpet to flugelhorn, showing equal facility on both in bands led by Jay McShann, Benny Carter, Dexter Gordon and Gerry Mulligan until he discovered the Flumpet.
To oversimplify somewhat, the trumpet, with its strident, crackling tone, is a hard bop instrument par excellence, while the warmer, mellower flugelhorn is more suited to contemplative lyricism, so for a while Farmer traveled with both horns in his luggage.
Lately, however, he has taken to playing an instrument capable of showcasing both sides of his talent: the flumpet, a hybrid horn specially designed to combine the powerful clarity of the trumpet with the round, burnished tone of the flugelhorn.

Coming up on the Central Avenue scene in Los Angeles in 1945 and working with the bands of Johnny Otis, Benny Carter, Gerald Wilson, and others, Farmer developed a bop-oriented style that retained the trumpet's lyrical flavor; he eventually settled on the flugelhorn in 1962 with its richer sound.
Much later, noted trumpet designer David Monette created the flumpet for Farmer; it combines a brassy trumpet sound with the warmer flugelhorn sound.
Each of these tunes are presented with spirited solos from flumpet, tenor sax, and piano; on “I Mean You” the ensemble takes it one step further by trading fours and by standing back while Rufus Reid turns out an inspired and imaginative bass solo.

Art Farmer was one of the most respected survivors of the generation of musicians weaned on bebop, and one of its most subtle and distinguished practitioners.
