Haloalkane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A haloalkane, also known as alkyl halogenide, halogenalkane, or halogenoalkane, and alkyl halide is a chemical compound derived from an alkane by substituting one or more hydrogen atoms with halogen atoms.
Substitution with fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine results in fluoroalkanes, chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and iodoalkanes, respectively.
In the 1960s, fluoroalkanes and bromofluoroalkanes became available, and were quickly recognised as one of the most effective fire fighting materials discovered.

QSPR Using MOLGEN-QSPR: The Challenge of Fluoroalkane Boiling Points   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Fluoroalkanes (containing C, H, and F only) are a subset of haloalkanes, and a description of a subset can be reasonable if higher precision is desired at the expense of some loss of generality.
While this is true for all C-Hal bonds, attractive interactions between F atoms (negative end of a strong dipole) and H atoms (positive end of a weak dipole) seem to be stronger than corresponding interactions involving atoms of higher halogens, due to the high partial charge and the small radius of a bonded F atom.
Accepting fluoroalkane boiling points as a challenge we were curious on the viability of a model of the simplest kind for the boiling points of this class of compounds, i.e., a multilinear regression model based on simple descriptors that are directly derived from molecular structure.

Process for preparing adduct of unsaturated alcohol and iodinated fluoroalkane - Patent 5254754
In general, an adduct of an unsaturated compound and an iodinated fluoroalkane is prepared by reacting the unsaturated compound and the iodinated fluoroalkane in the presence of a radical catalyst.
An object of the present invention is to provide a process for preparing an adduct of an unsaturated alcohol and an iodinated fluoroalkane at an improved conversion of the iodinated fluoroalkane.
The conversion of the iodinated fluoroalkane and the yield of the adduct are shown in Table 2.

The fluoroalkanes and hydrofluoroalkanes of particular interest are those compounds which have comparable boiling points and other thermal properties to the chlorine containing fluoroalkanes which they are replacing, but which are also less damaging or benign to the ozone layer.
The good solubility of chlorine containing fluoroalkanes with mineral oils allows the mineral oil to circulate around the heat transfer device together with the chlorine containing fluoroalkane, and this in turn ensures proper lubrication of the compressor.
Unfortunately, however, the replacement fluoroalkane and hydrofluoroalkane heat transfer fluids such as R-134a have different solubility characteristics to the chlorine containing fluoroalkanes presently in use and tend to be insufficiently soluble in mineral oils to allow the latter to be used as lubricants.

Haloalkane   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Haloalkane, Halogenoalkanes or Alkyl Halides are compounds derived from alkanes by substituting one or more hydrogen atoms with halogen atoms.
Fluoroalkanes, chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and iodoalkanes are possible, as are mixed compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons - the notorious CFCs responsible for ozone depletion) etc.
Thus, the C-I of an iodoalkane generally reacts faster than the C-F of a fluoroalkane.

The orientations of the molecules within the complexes are very similar to those determined in an ab initio study of the interactions between singlet carbenes and fluoroalkanes [15].
This result is in contrast to the interaction between fluoroalkanes such as fluoromethane and carbomethoxycarbene, where two ylide-like conformations are observed [15].
This result is in agreement with a previous study of the interactions of singlet carbenes with fluoroalkanes [15].

Fluoroalkanes, chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and iodoalkanes arepossible, as are mixed compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons - the notorious CFCs responsiblefor ozone depletion) etc.
One should note that within the halogen series, the C-X bond weakens as one goes to heavier halogens, and this affects therate of reaction.
Thus, the C-I of an iodoalkane generally reacts faster thanthe C-F of a fluoroalkane.

The second component of the project (as part of a larger research group effort) will apply the methods of protein engineering and directed evolution to an investigation of the structural factors that determine substrate specificity (cap domain of the protein) and efficiency of halide binding/release for the three enzymes.
HDHs are, at most, weakly active towards fluoroalkanes and in decontaminating these substrates, an improvement in the enzymatic catalysis of their turnover is essential to further their bioremediation application.
The absence of an X-ray crystal structure for a fluorocarboxylic acid dehalogenase hinders the application of a rational site-directed mutagenesis approach to the alteration of HDHs towards increased fluoroalkane activity.
