		In 1999, the Flushing Line was designated a National Millennium Trail (along with the Appalachian Trail and 14 others) by a joint program of the White House Millennium Council, the United States Department of Transportation, and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.
		East of this point, both the Flushing Line and the Astoria Line were operated by the IRT and the BMT; details on that dual operation are in the Background section.
		The Astoria Line is a rapid transit line of the BMT division of the New York City Subway, serving the neighborhood of Astoria, Queens.

		The Flushing Line (originally called the Woodside and Corona Line) was one of two lines of the NYC subway to have been operated jointly by two different divisions: the IRT and BMT.
		The original intent of the line was to connect the LIRR and the New York Central railroads.

	LIRR Timeline
		LIRR builds the Newtown and Flushing RR, better known as the White Line (for the color of the cars) from Winfield to Flushing.
		This line ended up being the shortest lived of all the many RR's on Long Island, being abandoned in 1876 (although horse cars were later used until about 1880).
		The White Line is abandoned for regular passenger service although it was connected with the Central branch for special trains to serve the Creedmoor Rifle Range.
