After the arrival of the English Quakers in 1657 Stuyvesant sought to renege on earlier promises of religious toleration, prompting freeholders in the area led by John Bowne to issue the Flushing Remonstrance, considered one of the earliest documents proclaiming religious freedom in America.
Flushing became a commuter suburb after trolley lines were extended (1888-99) and the Long Island Rail Road was electrified.

The park is nowhere near as well-kept as the more 'socially acceptable' parks in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and maybe that's why most Queens residents don't come by.
In the center of the park is the coolest outdoor sculpture in New York City, 'The Globe.' It has been featured in several hiphop videos and on the covers of several albums including the Beastie Boys' Licensed To Ill, Craig Mack's Project: Funk Da World, and of course Levi Asher's gentle folk-rock outing, Queensboro Ballads.
The park was largely built for the '39-'40 fair, though most of the buildings date from the '64-'65 event.

Of the approximately 1,000 species of wild plants within the city limits of New York exclusive of Staten Island, little less than one-third were noted in our trip to Corona and Flushing, by actual count 318.
If not completely destroyed, the colonies of plants that flourished during the Age of the Meadows, a long time ago (1936), now are reduced to a few stray ditch dwellers that are neighbors to the steam shovel.
