Clarinet Sonata (Poulenc) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because Poulenc died before the piece was published, editors have had to guess as to the identity of some notes, as well as missing dynamics and articulations.
The structure differs from the fast-slow-fast pattern of a traditional sonata in that the first movement is itself split into three sections in the pattern fast-slow-fast.
The sonata is the second of Poulenc's three sonatas for wind instruments, the others being the Flute Sonata (1956) and the Oboe Sonata (1962).

Poulenc wrote a trio of sonatas for woodwind instruments late in his life and all three reflect a culmination of craft and inspiration.
Brahms wrote sonatas for the darker instruments — violas, clarinets and such — passing over the lighter flute but Pahud showed that the flute can be a vehicle for such darker tones in the hands of a capable performer.

 Francis Poulenc
Poulenc was born in Paris on January 7, 1899.
The Sonata for Flute and Piano is the first of three sonatas for piano and a wind instrument, inspired by Debussy’s late instrumental sonatas, and each dedicated to the memory of a friend.
The Clarinet Sonata, Poulenc’s last composition, was dedicated to composer Arthur Honegger, the Oboe Sonata, to Serge Prokofiev, and the Flute Sonata dedicated to the great patroness of chamber music Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge.

Poulenc's final opera was a one-act tragedy entitled La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) that was premiered at the Paris Opéra-Comique on February 6, 1959.
He was particularly fond of the woodwind instruments, and planned a set of sonatas for all of them, yet only lived to complete three: the Flute Sonata (1956), the Oboe Sonata (1962) and the Clarinet Sonata (1962), works of elegiac beauty and technical perfection.
Francis Poulenc died in Paris on January 30, 1963 and was interred in Cimetière Père Lachaise, Paris.

The Flute Sonata is as typical of Poulenc as anything he ever wrote, combining as it does elegant charm and brashness, and embodying a disarming combination of innocence and sophistication and a naturalness that seems to stem directly from the boulevard cafés.
Although titled ‘sonata,’ the piece makes no pretense of being one formally -- none of the three movements is in sonata form -- nor does it make any effort at instrumental equality: the flute is frankly the star, with the keyboard cast in a supporting role.
Having sung his tender song, Poulenc devises a virtuosic finale that is nearly all one big elbow in the ribs.

Flute Sonata, Francis Poulenc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The rather unusual title for a work for orchestra - in fact a Concerto - is explained by the fact that it was originally written by Francis Poulenc, the French composer who died in 1963 and was a member of the composers who were known as "Les Six", for Flute and Piano.
With his usual skill and expertise, Sir Lennox Berkeley has 'converted' this short work into a concert which is so convincing that the Composer himslef might, if he had heard it, have wondered why he did not think of it in the first place!
It is a most attractive work giving full scope to the range and versatility to the Flute as a solo instrument as well as providing us with a slow movement of unalloyed charm.

Pahud perhaps errs in beginning his disc with by far its strongest piece, Poulenc's joyously melodic 'Flute Sonata', serenely playful, influenced by Stravinsky's neo-classicism, but spiritually just as close to Mozart.
The only other work here that compares is Poulenc's old 'Les Six' chum Milhaud's 'Sonatina', which has a rhythmic energy and strangeness that marks it out from its rather fey surroundings.
The disc is a great sampler of the 'greatest flute hits/repertory' of the 20th century (excluding the solo flute pieces-Debussy's Syrinx or Varese's Density 21.5).

Possibly this was in the back of James Galway's mind when, years later, he suggested that the Flute Sonata would be an ideal candidate for arrangement into a concerto.
A contemporary of Poulenc and himself partly of French descent, Berkeley had a strong sympathy for the French style (something often apparent in his own compositions).
