If you have ever swum behind a diver who was using the traditional flutter kick within a few feet of a silty bottom, you probably saw the visibility disappear in explosions of silt as water driven by each of his kicks was directed downward and into the bottom.
The frog kick motion can be reduced to as little as just the rotation and extension of the ankles and toe-flick to adapt the amount of movement and thrust to a particular situation.
With the reverse frog kick you have a reverse gear for poking around walls, pipes, and wrecks without having to push off of delicate or sharp surfaces.

Flutter kick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flutter kick is a kicking movement used in both swimming and calisthenics.
In swimming (either front crawl or backstroke), the legs are extended straight out in line with the body and then moved up and down, the one leg kicking downwards as the other leg moves up again.
In calisthenics, one lies on one's back, with one's hands under the hips, and the chin tucked to the chest.

 Total Immersion Swimming
Flutter kicks are more like using a brush than like actually kicking.
That kick is purely to maintain some momentum so my drilling doesn't turn into a series of lurching movements, in which I have to expend energy to overcome inertia.
Maintaining a steady kick during switches is one of the ways I practice the very different coordination of 6-beat vs. 2-beat kicking.

 Wherefore Art Thou Kicking?
Of course, for a rotation kick to result in large forward propulsion it must be timed correctly with the stroke — you want as much of the stroke to coincide with the actual core rotation as possible.
Flutter kicks provide small amounts of direct forward propulsion and, used correctly, rotation kicks provide large amounts of indirect forward propulsion.
Rather, I encourage you to learn to swim using 2-beat rotation-only kicking with zero loss of balance (consider this a critical success factor for effective distance swimming), then experiment with judiciously adding some flutter kicks for small increases in speed in appropriate situations (which may be few and far between).

This one involves the results of a test of technique or style for basic flutter kicking, the most common kick used in scuba diving, regardless of the kind of fin.
In brief, narrow (n) kicks were faster than wide (w) ones for both fins, with narrow kicks of the paddle fins even doing better than wide kicks of the split fins.
But the results are so obvious that, in conjunction with my earlier observations (on having to use narrow kicks to achieve best performance in open water tests of several fins, regardless of which fin I was testing), I'm not interested in bothering with further tests of narrow versus wide flutter kicks myself.

Bottom Up Swimming -- Part 1
The kicks you use here are called “flutter kicks” (or FK) just like they are when you kick horizontally to propel yourself down the lane.
And while one leg kicks the other leg recovers - moves from in front of the body plane to behind the body plane, thus putting it in the correct position to kick.
Those kicks you used to rotate yourself, one kick to turn you to the right and, later, one kick to turn you to the left, are called “rotation kicks” (or RK).

 Fins -- 2003 pool
Thus, series of tests early in the season or when using different kicks (e.g., backward finning) showed marked increases over the days that the tests were run.
But series involving routine flutter kicks later in the season were already under conditions of previous training and maximum physical conditioning, and did not show further, significant day to day improvement.
Probably the only differences among fins that are easily sensed by the diver involve the feeling of strain when kicking the fins or a feeling of "weight" of the fins under water (which doesn't necessarily correlate with their actual mass or weight out of the water, as reported in the 2002 report).
