Fluxbox is built with C++, based on the sources of Blackbox 0.61.0.
Fluxbox provides configurable window decorations, a root menu to launch applications and a toolbar that shows the current workspace name, the focused application name and the current time.
Fluxbox enables you to use specialized files that contain X(1) resources to specify colors, textures, pixmaps and fonts, and thus the overall look of your window borders, menus and the toolbar.

Fluxbox must be restarted for changes in the alpha value to take effect (just choose restart in the menu).
The author believes that applications such as xmms whose primary function is not graphical ought to be able to continue to operate without the display updating (mplayer has a good excuse to pause).
However, this behaviour is not under the control of the Fluxbox developers - you should talk to XMMS people to see if they can make it continue playing even without display updates (though I imagine this may also be a difficult problem).

Using Fluxbox after you boot up can happen in 2 ways, depending on if you boot into a graphical interface, or the command line interface.
The command line way of starting of X and Fluxbox is the same across all Unix and Linux, so that is what I will cover.
This leaves only the word " fluxbox " on the first line of the file, and fluxbox will be started as the window manager for X when you type 'startx'.

I also renamed the folder ".fluxbox" (/home/avi) which was created while installing previous version of Fluxbox to ".fluxbox01" and I took the init, menu, and titlebar files from the /usr/local/share/fluxbox directory to newly created ".fluxbox" folder (as instructions).
I like Fluxbox and I want to be familier with it but now I am thinking to uninstall the Fluxbox and start from scratch again.
Fluxbox window manager is not for beginners, you should start with gnome/kde or xfce.

Here are the additional apps I choose to start with fluxbox (it varies somewhat, depending on my mood, and I will add a '#' to the front to comment out items when I don't want them any more, that way I may remove the '#' and re-add the application in the future.
Fluxbox has an "init" file that is used when you log in with Fluxbox as your Window Manager.
Fluxbox comes with several "Sytem Styles" that will show you some of the variety of alterations that can be done with the visual styles presented.

Fluxbox also adds a native key grabber to the base functionality it inherits from Blackbox.
This also gives Fluxbox the benefit of a well defined base of community provided themes, even though it's a relatively new project, with version 0.1.6 the current release.
I can happily recommend Fluxbox to current Blackbox users and to users of other window managers who would like a more nimble environment, without giving up some of the creature comforts available in heavier window managers.

The other day poolio from #fluxbox irc was asking about news feeds and it sparked an intrest I had.
Shortly after a wiki started for fluxbox that was just a test I guess you could say and we didnt tell many people about it so the content didnt grow and eventually the host went off line and now for some time it stayed that way.

FLuxbox is in the ubuntu repositories but they are two versions behind and are missing a lot of handy features like fluxbox-generate_menu.
I think it reduced the time it took to log in from nearly a minute to 10 seconds (this is a very slow machine).
Logged out, chose fluxbox, and then received an error telling me that /home/myname/.fluxbox/startup was not found, and so xsessions couldn't start.

it says in the post that the fluxbox in the repositories is slow, thats why he built it instead of apt-getting it.

Earlier, I asked whether it would be possible to run Fluxbox as Gnome's default windowmanager instead of metacity.
You will see fluxbox first, then the gnome-panel, and finally the desktop will appear and draw over all the fluxbox desktop.
Fluxbox starts straight away but the splash screen for gnome seems to stop at the Windows Manager stage for 2 mins then it loads up fine.

just installed debian for the first time, i kind of like it, but don't know how to upgrade fluxbox to the greatest and latest fluxbox i believe it is version 9.13 or so.
The latest version of fluxbox is 0.9.14, and that is available in Debian testing ('etch') and unstable ('sid').
Notice though that it is often not possible to just pick a single package from testing or unstable since they tend to have dependencies that can only be fulfilled by picking them from testing or unstable respectively.
